After riding 9,000 miles around Europe this summer and taking the bike through some very questionable terrains, it has taken quite a beating. Even before setting of on my trip the cbr was crying for some tlc but unfortunately i had no time.

The bike was dropped once in Spain (side stand on a cobble beach) not the most intelligent thing and once in Marroco whilst my gps took me through what it thought was a road (Infact a dirt track up a mountain). Unfortunately without and crash protectors as i could not afford them at the time.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/p1000219.jpg
Pannel was shattered into 5 pieces.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/2_177.jpg

Aswell as cosmetics the bike is far due for a service. The oil, filters, pads, chain/sprokets, tyres, battery have all been abused to the point of giving up.

The oil sump is cracked and bodged up with liquid metal.

The chain pretty much died in Spain and had to be adjusted every 100 miles all the way back to the uk to avoid it slipping.

Battery was cooked by bad regulator and lasts minutes with the lights on.

Rear tyre has 3 nails, and was bodged with tyre sealant about 5,000 miles ago.

And much more Smile

Being a student my lack of space and tools has always stopped me from actually attempting any work for myself. So i went out and invested some money into some proper tools. Air compressor, Air tools, Mig Welder, Cordless drill, Dremel multitool, Multimeter, Socket set and so on.

I have only just started today so i will update the thread tomorrow when i get more done. I was not panning to actually post this so only took photo's towards the end of the day when all the work had already been done, so its hard to see just how bad it was before.

Day one.

Parts arrived today. K&N air filter, Oil, Battery, Oil filter, DID chain and sprockets, Crash Mushrooms & Rear Pads.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/6_190.jpg

Rode up to Halfoards in the morning and had them mix paint to match the bike, bought the appropriate thinners, primer so on.

Sand blasted large chunks of rust off subframe, callipers, swing arm and engine bolts.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/7_190.jpg
started primering the side pannel.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/9_190.jpg
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/10_190.jpg

Sandblasted rust and dirt off the disks, sandblasting and repainting forks & callipers aswell.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=67715

Started to polish the alternator casing & Rear sets using a dremel wire wheel thing.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/8_792.jpg

Epoxied the cracks on the right hand fairing, which was in about 5 pieces now. Applied fibreglass filler to large hole in the fairing. (Old photo, before the extra damage in Europe) Sanded down, added a new layer of general purpose body filler.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=67718

Sanded down again, 80 grit, 240, 800 then 1200. And started applying the first layer of Primer using an airbrush (Takes bloody ages).

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=67716

Fitted new battery, Air filter, & balanced the carbs again.

Sandblasted and primered the very rusty swing arm.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=67717

Started rebuilding the exhaust, Drilled out rivets, removed wadding cut out the inner pipe to replace for a stainless straight through. Will try find the right size pipe tomorrow and weld it in there. Smile

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=67719

Ok so thats pretty much it for day one. Tomorrow hopefully i will be doing the chain and sprockets, oil sump, rear pads, oil, filters and starting to paint. Hopefully i will also receive the new Double Bubble screen i ordered.

This is the first time i have done any proper work to a bike as i normally just get the garage to do it, so its quite interesting to see what i can get away with doing myself.

Thanks

you should take off parts before shot blasting them. if the grit gets into your bearings (wheel and swingarm) it will mince them pretty quick.

I ran a website for many years which i sold last week for just over£14,000. It was too easy to buy a new bike with that kind of money so i thought id be better off investing it in tools and learning in the process.

Yes unfortunately i spent far too much. Tools alone must have been around £600 and the welder was off ebay. The rest was brand new.

A rip off. About £8.50 for 100ml... Then you need primer, thinner and lacquer. Then you find that its always either to think or to thin. Its a right pain, to be fair i wish i stuck with rattle cans.
The air brush is too small for panels and takes years and the standard spray gun is too powerful and blasts paint everywhere, i should have bought a small air gun before starting, but its too late now.

That would have been the proper way of doing it. I did leave the old chain and filters on during the blasting however. But yea. If i had not needed the bike today i would have stripped it.

Good project!

I'm quite impressed that you managed to keep your current bike and work on it + learn as opposed to blowing the money on something less valuable. Not trying to offend, it's just what a lot of people would do.

Update for today. Was hoping to get the chain and sprockets done but the painting took so long i have had no time.

Painted all morning, properly sanding between layers and trying to do a good job. Right as im applying the last layer huge rain clouds come out of no where and start ripping it down, destroying all the paintwork.

I had to sand down again to the primer and start from scratch which was a right pain.

Im in plymouth now. I've found a new house a while back, thank god.

I managed to do very little today after some red paint was left in the spray gun when i lacquered so all the white became pink..

Another day wasted. I managed to paint the forks but thats about it really. Oh yeah and i made a pikey jack.

You painted your indicator lens and the bolts and chain adjuster Doh!

I hope you didn't get paint on your fork seals either Shocked

If your going to do the whole shebang, I'd get the wheels shotblasted and powder coated...

I have a new set of new indicators off ebay since the left one was dead, and bolt for the swing arm which is why i did not bother covering it properly. Im removing the swing arm tomorrow and sand blasting the entire thing. Im not sure why i premiered just one side of it like that. But yes. I have been pretty bad with masking stuff. Lotts of bits a bobs that have been painted that should have not. But i have some very strong paint stripper to sort that out.

This entire project was ment to be 2-3 days max. As i get deeper into it i find more and more that i want to do.. Looks like 1 week minimum now.

Tomorrow, painting brake callipers , manifolds, polishing the clutch cover and replacing the vinyl on the side pannels.

Anyone know what the best technique would be to get the brake callipers cleaned and ready to be painted? Can't be sanded, and im scared to sandblast them encase i cease the pistons.

Looking good, but I'd be tempted to strip the bike a little bit more - am thinking of the swingarm where you have primed over the nut etc and the front brake caliper which you may regret completely spraying over.

No offence meant Thumbs Up

Yeah i guess i could have done a better job with the taping. The swingarm has been blasted and painted, the side panel has been finished. Doing the Chain/Sprockets today and finishing off the exhaust.

Will post some pictures later.
