Hi, I am very confused with how bikes are classified as imports or not.

Can somebody please explain what is meant by Grey & Parallel Question

What can I look for on my NSR to see if it is an import Question

How does this affect the bike when I want to service/sell/MOT it Question

Thanks,

Grey Imports are bikes that have no UK spec model.
Parallel Imports have a matching UK spec model.
Greys are usually more difficult to get spares for which is why insurance may sometimes be more expensive.
As for getting the spares most greys use same or similar parts to a different para import i.e. the RF400 uses Bandit 400 spares.

You can usually tell an unofficial import because the clocks will be in kmh instead of mph. These bikes are usually the ones that cannot be derestricted easily (if at all)

Hi

There never was a UK model CBR400. The VFR400 was imported in very limited numbers officially and it wasnt cheap. I suppose you could argue that all the VFR400 NC30s are parallel imports because of that.

The ZXR400 was officially imported, as was the 400 Bandit for a short time. Yamaha imported a small number of FZR400s as well (think they were the SP spec ones, not sure), and in the late 80's Suzuki imported a batch of 50 odd early model GSXR400s

All the best

Keith

Have a look here:

https://www.400greybike.co.uk/modelidentifier.html

The only sure way is the check the frame numbers. There are a few differences in the way that UK and Japanese machines were put together, but the specification is generally the same.
The most important fact is that UK machines were never restricted in the speedo, so if a bike ad states "derestricted", then you can bet your bottom dollar that it's an import.

AFAIK, the parts themselves are the same between the models, so it would be strange if your insurance premium would be *that* much cheaper for a UK machine.
Parts aren't necessarily rare - just expensive.

I'm thinking of looking at an ER-5 that is an "import." Does it make any difference to getting parts for this bike if it is an import? I'm asuming not but want to be sure.

Check whether it's a grey or parallel import. Either way though, since the bike is also officially sold in the UK, I can't see why parts would be a problem.
