Tall rider/First "big" bike

Hi All, great site. Wonder if you could help me.

I am after my first big bike, but I am a big fella (6'5", and a good few pounds overweight ), and I was asking if you have any suggestions for what would be most comfortable.

I am doing my direct access on a CB500, which is kind of comfortable, but it gives me cramp in my right leg after a two hour lesson.

I am looking at Bandits/Fazers/Hornets etc, but I have not actually been to look at one in the flesh yet. If you have any tips on bikes like these, I would be most appreciative. I only have £2K to spend

Should be able to get a nice bandit/hornet for that amount mate. Personally I'd have a look at a VFR 750/800 as well.

Something more upright like a Bandit or Fazer is a good idea. I'm 6'2 and found the CB500 rather too small.

Go to a good dealer and sit on everything that you like the look of to find something comfortable. Then you'll know which models you want to concentrate on finding for under £2k.

old style hornets are good for taller riders. the newer ones are more "sport" than "sport touring" so they are abit cramped.

bandits are all good, really cheap too.

fazers are just awesome, especially the new shape. bit pricey though.

I'm 6'6", 18 stone, and I started on a Bandit so I'll happily pimp them out to anyone sizeable as a starter bike.

As above, you should be able to find a decent Bandit dirty cheap, and have a few hundred quid left over for insurance, gear, and accessories.

I found hornets abit cramped.

I'm the same size as you 6'5" 17 stone, and find my TDM 900 exceedingly comfortable.


It's not exactly a stylish bike but it's quick enough and comfortable.

It depends what you want from the bike if you are going out for short rides for fun a hornet would be fine but if you plan putting milage on it I would go for a TDM or similar. £2k may get you an old 900 but definately get a good 850. My 900 cost 2.5k nearly a year and a half ago. '02 in mint condition with extras and 20k miles.


I would try to go for the 900 over the 850.

If your looking at Hornets check out a Triumph Speed Four too, cheap as chips and cracking bike for the money.

I make a desmo look like a minimoto.

If you are buying a bike as a fun bike consider something like Honda FMX650 too big and fun.

Hi guys, just want to say thanks for all the advice (Mainly silent, as I have spent a lot of time lurking here catching up on some tips, tricks and other wonders.)

I passed my MOD 1 yesterday and my MOD 2 today. I have also bought an old Bandit (600N) and am looking forward to many years of riding. Its a lovely red number, so if you see me in and around Geordie land give us a nod!
