Websites, I need to make one; I'm starting it off under a random freeby thing, like wix.com(bored of that now) but I can't find anything what I want.

I need to set one up, where people can add listings/adverts themselves for convenience, like an Ebay thing but much more basic to start (would help to have a forum inc).... I'm not planning on rivaling Ebay either.

Any suggestions?

Stuff like that takes a lot of setting up and managing.

Most decent php scripts etc will cost you money.

Getting someone to do it will cost even more.

I suppose I could do it, but it takes time for stuff like that.

If you know NOTHING then I personally think your setting your standards too high. Read around websites first, try building them using html/css then try PHP.

You will need a content management system for users to add/delete content.

They added all the content themselves and they were useless with computers so its a good tool.

That is my job under an administration assistant title, but I'm quite small time.

I also, often hate getting home after sorting a few customers' sites out/doing admin work and want to spend more time working on one for myself.. I'm dead lazy with it but i'm my own worst enemy.

You will need:
A domain name
Hosting that will allow you to execute scripts and set up a database.
FTP program to access it (winscp is good and free)

I'm assuming you know html and CSS. Start lookign for some open source php that does similar things to what you want. you probably wont be able to directly use it but if you look up bits of code you don't understand here:

Use that knowledge to modify the open source scripts until they do what you want.

If you can't do the above, your going to have to pay someone to do it for you.

Buy a domain name and i'll chuck it on my server for a couple of quid a month.

Hosting includes mysql, php, asp and asp.net think perls on there aswell, if not it can be installed if you want - not that you wanna use that really .

Can do email hosting aswell for an extra fee or you can just set it up to forward to a gmail account or similar.

Eugh, I'm back here again, I've painstakingly gone through the links provided and I'm drained.

Although - I would like to say I appreciate the help provided..

I've had a thought though; instead of me forking out for the software and some guru to sit and work magic, how would I get advertising pulled in? The site I want to get working once run, should pull in revenue from companies wanting to target or at least contextual advertising campaigns.

My issue is(maybe mentioned before) I want a system people can post info their selves, like an Autotrader where you simply enter you ad and submit it....

My dad is much more adapt at this than me, and he's advising not to get to enthusiastic with it unless I can spend silly time on it, which atm I cant. It's a service that would benefit thousands I think once it's taken off and known, but it's a clueless idiot that had an idea and can't make it work - me.

Any advice before I wrap this up for another 6 months/year?

Oh, I have been informed I have 2 names registered; .com & .co.uk - and a type of hosting package but I'm not sure on the terms/deal as yet..

I code in PHP and I am generally regarded as one of those people that creates magic.

This sounds like an intriguing challenge.

If you feel like paying me a couple of hundreds pounds I'll code a basic working system for you from scratch that will meet all the functional requirements. Normally to get something like this off of the ground it takes a couple of days worth of frantic coding and then months of slow polishing as the small bugs and usability issues are sorted out.

I'm looking at having a hand into it, and I haven't got money to throw at a web guy or I'd have done it....

If I save up and get a web guy to do the shiz, I've created a job for a guy to build a site. if I go this route and get involved, I've learned what i'm in with and how to tweak/change and follow things up.

That said - even as a n00by your offer is dually noted should I decide to pass it off to someone new although I would show preference to a more established member at that point.. cheers fella.
