Took my first lesson yesterday and it seems great so far, even if it's just for a bit of tuition and kicking the shit out of some pads for an hour. Wouldn't mind getting into it competitively though.

Anyone on here do it and got some tips/advise? I find it hard to change my stance to left foot forwards to get power from my right leg.

Got no problems with high kicks, went over the pads and almost got my mate in the face by accident Very Happy And that's after 2 operations and a broken femur so I feel kinda chuffed seeing other people struggle to kick.

I'm assuming based on that you have a southpaw stance (ie your right leg is furthest forward)?

One easy way is to walk in to it. Start doing it very slowly and obvious at first as it doesnt matter on pads when learning. Just take a normal step forwards with your left leg then bring your right hip round. You get your power from the forward momentum. There are then feints and variations you can learn later on.

The other technique is the shuffle (don't know if it has a proper term). Quickly shuffle your feet so your left foot is then forward, which is better for when in closer so the opponent compared to the above method. Your power will come from the pendulum efect here. Again feints/fakes can be learnt later on with this.

Particularly if you want to compete, learn to soak impacts. Conditioning makes a huge difference to ability in the ring.

Other than that, I echo smegbrains' sentiment, what works for others may not work for you.

Yeah, a southpaw stance comes natural to me (but I'm right handed).

I always end up leading with my right foot. It doesn't make sense though as it is my most powerful leg so really I should lead with my left and kick with my right but it felt weird yesterday and subconsciously I'd always go back to the right foot leading.

Sounds like I'm making a big deal over something simple but for some reason it was the most difficult thing I had to do yesterday Laughing

Oh...and I can't skip for shit lol

You'll be surprise at how quick you learn to skip properly and efficiently.

I used to do Thai Kick Boxing and was in the squad to go and fight in the British Amateur Championships, it was great fun and damn hard work. I took a blow whilst sparring to the ribs and that was it. I missed time from work albeit the first day of a new job, but had trouble lifting my arm for a few weeks. I then decided that fun is one thing, being competitive and having commitments is another.

I never really had the killer instinct and never had the urge to bash the shit out of the opponent. Style, technique and a bit of flair made me happier.

BJJ is a briliant thing to learn, im slowly learning myself (self taught) found a brilliant youtube channel that demonstrates just about every bjj move there is, sweeps/transitions/rubber guard+advanced rubber guard.

Im learning mui tai aswell (probably spelt wrong) again self taught, its all about stances/movement as long as u learn to get moment and movement correctly the power comes with it, forcing the power in a bad stance useually puts you off-balance and leaves your guard right open.

Good thing to learn might be MMA several martial arts because in the end one thing u learn in one can transfer to the other which is a great help.

I like the idea of mui tai (spelt wrong i know) i dont have long reach and prefer closer (clinch) combat, knee's and elbow's but like said before, one bad blow and u can get quite badly hurt, so just be careful and good luck with your training.

How do you train clinch work if you are self taught, and therefore I assume training on your own?

Do you now attend a Thai boxing gym?

Edit: The correct spelling of Muay Thai is in the title of the thread.

I meant self taught as in don't have an instructor, me and 2 friends all train togather learning and practicing new stuff on each other.

Not attending a gym yet, closest one to me is about 20 minutes away in a car and i have no transport at the moment, i would have to catch several busses to get there so not viable option.

I know the proper spelling is there but the thread title does'nt come up when your typing a post.

ive done boxing a few martial arts for years. mostly done karate than anything else.

stance wise.. stick with whatevers naturlay for now, and over time, with experiance and what not, youll learn to adapt stances. was a few years before i could fight both ways, mostly get confused with blocks becuase everything backwards haha.

but yeah, stand howevers natural and everything else will come over time

I've been doing Mai Tai for years - ever since their classic single 'Body & Soul':
