I have a +- 1975-1979 DT 125 that burnt one of the coils in the flywheel. I would like to ask if someone can help me with a wiring diagram for these coils and the ignition system. The coil with the thicker copper wire winding and two windings is the one that got damaged, can you also help with resistance info to use when rewinding them. What causes these coils to fail? The bike was running very well and stopped in one go as if switched off.

The wire has a coat of insulating lacquer on it, which is what makes the winding a coil rather than a big lump of copper. The reason for failure is usually that the lacquer has broken down with age and caused an internal short in the coil. When an alternator stops spinning, you get a huge spike of current so that's when most vehicle electrical gubbins get killed.

You can rewind it yourself easily enough, you need to be mindful of the gauge and resistance of the wire, the number of turns of wire on the coil, and how the coil is laid down - i.e. watch carefully as you unwind the old wire!

Thanks for that finpos, i did get the correct wire from a friend. My main problem is that the wires where the coil connects to was broken while transporting the coil and I do not have an idea how it connects to the rest of the wires.

Will do, I need some time to do all these technologically advanced things though. Thanks a lot.
