PostPosted: 16:42 - 22 Aug 2009    Post subject: off road tyre sizes Reply with quote

Hi, I want to replace my well worn off road tyres with knobblies, sizes are 120/60/17 and 160/60/17. I've had a quick google and upto now have only seen knobblies in different units of measurements which to be honest I can't be assed trying to convert.

What sizes do I need and any recommendations for places to shop for them?

Cheers.

You need 120/60/17 and 160/60/17 or pretty similar if you want to fit them on to the same rims. Don't get knobblies in those sizes very easily, so unless you're going to go for seriously compromised off-road performance, or new rims, you probably won't find what you're looking for.
I believe there are sometimes batches of 'special' tyres done in road sizes, but don't have any more details.

With knobblies you can move the width of the tyre around more than a road tyre (ie go up down 20/30 more easily, but there's no way you're getting around having wide 17" rims.

Aha, you bought the SM, not the TE.

Should have bought a TE if you wanted to offroad.

yeh fair point...

but i bought an sm so i could do 60 foot jumps lol!! Not!

610 wheels seem thin on the ground, i wonder if wheels from other models may fit?

found these but £295!!

It does say "TE 610E" in the item title, which is what is in that pic i posted.

Could always email the seller?

Bear in mind that you'll need to change the brake caliper too, don't know if the both models use the same caliper mounting points either.

It's going to get expensive!

Caliper brackets can be bodged up if needed. I believe they didn't change to radial calipers 'till later, so the rest should be pretty similar.

With a few spacers and the like, the majority of my KTM/husaberg/CCM wheels will fit across the majority of these bikes.

^ that would require some mechanical ability and knowledge so i will have to pass on that Mr. Green .

got my eye on these :

https://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/motorcycle/themes/motorcycletires/enduro/escape/escape_en.html

the 130/80/17 size says it's for a rear, could i put this on the front?
no probs with the 140/80/17 on the rear of course.

Why would you want to?

If you are talking that road-biased tyres, you can probably get them in the sizes you want anyway.
Going over size on the front is going to be particularly bad as it'll make it 'float' more easily, leaving you with even less directional control.

You should be able to easily and fairly cheaply (probably) buy all the bits you need 'off the shelf' I'd have thought. Try talking to a Husky dealer.

If you are really insistent on going down this (silly, to my mind) route, the TKC80 would make more sense and comes in 120 and 150 rears.

^

a "husky dealer", whats one of them lol? nah, good suggestion.

the TKC80 looks better than the conti escapes i was looking at.

i understand what you're saying but i want something that i can use to commute to work and go trail riding at weekends so it has to be an allrounder basically. im clueless as to what wheels from other bikes will fit mine, my rear tyre is nearly dead anyway, the front has a bit more life but not alot more, so will replace both and rear with road legal off road tyres.

thanks for the suggestions and please make any more if suitable i.e. other tyres that are 120/x/17's & 140-160/x/17's.

i already have one mate Mr. Green , my bike. it's a bit tatty and probably had a fairly hard life but is reliable and runs well Thumbs Up . i could sell it but for what i paid for it and what it's worth i wouldnt be able to buy much worse really without buying a complete shit heap. i also couldnt justify running 2 road legal bikes and a car.

think i will be going for something like this, pirelli MT21's 120 and a 130 both rear's with the 120 rear on the front. I will go to a 150 on the rear as thats standard on mine. Where I seen/read about this setup the owner states he's had no problems running rears on the front, others seem to run rears on fronts too w/o problems. I dont intend any trackdays etc (obviously).

Just out of interest what off-road tyre do you have on it just now?

I'm finding it hard to get proper off-road tyre for mine due to a 17" rear but I've got MT21's coming any day now.

Hopefully they'll do you though. That pic, it looks like a very wide front, not sure i'd like that, possibly slow turning and not very precise?

i dont have off road tyres on it atm i have bridgestone battleaxes or something on it now.

according to the thread where i nicked the pic from the front is a 120, might be knobblies making it look wider? also comments about the bike state it rides fine. im not too fussed on slight differences to the handling..... i know im making a compromise so i can go off road in a capable manner w/o changing wheels, disks, calipers etc.

I've done a fair bit of searching for tyres.... seems like 17" rears arent the real problem... it's getting 17" fronts.... are you getting 17" MT21's for the front? Good tyre choice (imo) btw.

Ah cool.

Nah 21" front, 17" rear, most 'proper' knobbly tyres I've seen for the rear are 18".

Good luck anyway and let us know how you get on with them Thumbs Up

bit of an update, yesterday i had an MT21 fitted to the front (the ONLY knobbly in 17") and a Michelin Karoo fitted to the rear, again a knobbly. It handles shit on tarmac now, good off road lol!

Dunno if i can live with the cornering on tarmac now, it is SHIT. And I mean shitter than a shit covered in shit made of shit and shit out of the shittiest shit arse in the world of shit things. It's also noisy. Great off road though Mr. Green .

What the fuck do I do? I'm confoosed.

Get a spare set of wheels Wink.
Anyway, welcome to the world of knobblies! You do get used to it after a while, but it's not going to offer near the same level of overall grip when you're balancing on a set of rubber squares designed to flex. The MT21 is a good trail-biased compromise tyre. I'm planning to use mine around Spain.

^ agree about the MT21, im no knobbly expert (obviously) but after being a bit nervous at first I soon got loads of confidence in them.... yesterday it got me and my bike up and down some pretty steep/high loose slopes in a quarry & mud in some woods.... really enjoyed it Thumbs Up. i did get used to it somewhat but slower corners on tarmac still had me going round them like i was at a T junction lol.

think i'll look into your original suggestion of another set of rims possibly from other bikes with spacers as husky rims are either v expensive and/or scarce.

really enjoyed yesterday though Mr. Green off road ftw!
