My dog will walk perfectly well on the lead (no pulling, stopping etc), will walk to heel off the lead, and plays nicely off the lead.

However, all this good behaviour goes flying out of the window as soon as he sees another dog - if he's on the lead he'll strain and pull in a desperate attempt to get over there (when on a choke/half-check collar he has come close to choking himself into unconsciousness when he's seen another dog), if he's off the lead i just lose any control over him and he's off like a flash to go and run over and play with the other dog(s).

He's not in anyway aggressive or dominant with the other dogs, just extremely playful - all he wants to do is run around and play chase with them. However, the fact that i lose any recall control over him when he spots a dog is a great cause for concern - not only because he may encounter an aggressive or unfriendly dog (and i'd be too far away to stop them fighting), but also because he may run out onto a road etc.

Admittedly, he's still fairly young (16 months), but it's getting to the point now where i'm often unwilling to let him off the lead if there are other dogs around - he's not interested in humans, he'll even ignore rabbits when off the lead and at heel, but as soon as he sees a dog, he's gone.

I've followed the basic 'rules' for good recall - rewards when he comes, not scolding if he doesn't come instantly, not calling when he's unresponsive etc, and without the presence of other dogs his recall is excellent.

I'm out of ideas on where to go next really..........do i put it down to puppyhood and keep on doing the training and hope he'll grow out of it? Should i call in a professional? Help!

I've been wondering the same thing and was going to post to see if anyone has attended these training classes. My pup has just come up to the age that they said training could begin (14 weeks), I'd be interested to know if anyone has paid for such training?

I read a book years ago about Britain's first proper police dog (Rex iii) who did something similar when away from his handler.

He solved it by using a catapult to fire a small stone at the dogs rear end when he was away from him and not responding to commands.

The dog was so suprised that his handler could somehow tap him on the behind at a distance he started to behave when off the lead.

The dog went on to catch loads of naughty men who hadn't shaved and found lots of trapped people in the rubble of the blitz. He even starred in a film made about him which would've gone straight to video but it hadn't been invented.

take him to proper training classes where others will have the same problem!!! You can train him when you are WITH other dogs, therefore it becomes normal for him to respect your commands in the company of other woofers...essentially you have to bore them of it!! takes time and only one of ours has a decent recall around other dogs, even after nearly 2 years! Mine has the same problem but the other way round. Arses to dogs, it humans she legs it off after. It's a painful experience and you feel like a tit. Especially when you're chasing a border collie that is full belt shouting:

POPPY!
*weeze*
POPPY!
POPPY!
*cough* *weeze*
POP...fuck it.
