Video Game Nation

Righty before I begin, I am not 100% sure if this is in the right section BUT seeing as it isn’t a tech related question I figured Random Banter would be the right place??

Anyway, essentially this was a small exhibition in Manchester’s crappy Urbis building about the video game industry in Britain and how we have aided in the development of video games over the years. I won’t lie to you, I didn’t give a shit about any of that. I went for two reasons:

1. To play on some free classic games
2. To see any old tech lying around and willy wave my computing hardware knowledge to any women knocking around.

Needless to say women + gaming exhibitions don’t mix. So reason number 2 shot out of the window very quickly.

The exhibition itself wasn’t very big, there were lots of old consoles in cabinets and quite a few games to play on. Also a couple of phones that you could pick up and listen to audio clips of game developers discussing selected games and consoles. However the exhibition is drawing to a close and as a result the audio clips sounded like Steven Hawking underwater.

The layout was fairly simple, a bedroom styled area, an arcade, a “development studio”, a football field and finally an over 18’s section. Dotted in between was a cinema screen showing old documentaries from the early 90’s and a few episodes of Games Master. I didn’t spend much time in here, the total running time for everything was over an hour and to be honest I wasn’t in the mood to hear any of Dominik Diamond’s corny one liners.

All in all for the size of the exhibition it was fairly decent but some areas didn’t feel polished. The arcade for instance was pretty naff. The machines didn’t work. Operation Wolf had broken down and there was nothing of much interest lying around. However generally the playable video games side of things was top notch. There was A LOT of games on offer for you to try out and you didn’t feel rushed into moving on to a new area. I’d say really that the exhibition could be done in maybe an hour and a half, including playing time and reading all the captions on the walls. Not bad when it only costs £3 to get in.

If you’re interested in computer games or you’re bored out of your mind in Manchester, it’s worth a visit. It’s nothing mind blowing but for £3 I’d definitely say it was worth every penny.

Anyway pictures.

Three quid for some quality gaming nostalgia, bargain. Shame about op wolf being on the fritz though. Cracking game that took quite a large amount of my pocket money as a kid.

Those Amiga's bring back fond memories. When I was a young'un my Dad used to take me to a computer club in Haydock. He would copy games so he didn't have to buy them for me. Infact I still have a box full of 80 illegal Amiga games Laughing.

The very first time he took me, he couldn't figure out how to turn the thing on. My how times have changed Smile

Loving the cpc464 I had the same setup with the colour monitor. It has to have been the most underrated of the 8 bit computers. Everyone I new at the time has speccys or Commodore 64's and the graphics were far superior on the Amstrad.
