Been covered to death and no doubt will prompt silly answers.

But CBR = City Bike Racing

Have a search and your answers will be revealed.

Suzuki Ones:

GS = Overhead cam 2 valve (per cylinder)

GSX= Overhead cam 4 valve

GSXR = Overhead cam 4 valve racing model

Yamaha ones:

ypvs = yamaha power valve system

yics = yamaha induction control system

yeis = yamaha energy induction system

model codes

RD = two stroke street

DT = two stroke off-road

XS = four stroke street

XT= four stroke off road

were the main four flagship lines apparently in the 70's according to Haynes

and so the list goes on and on.....

Legend has it the NS in NS and NSR Hondas refers to the nickosil ([nickol shirikonkabaido] in Japanese) inner wall processing.
I actually read it in a NS400 brochure.

I see....

...well I'm not well versed in model codes although I would hazard a guess at saying that many of them are just a code and not sense making.

I always liked bike short model names (pugs too) ie, GSXR sounds much better than "Mondeo" or 306 better than "Clio" etc etc

Quote:
GS - Gran Sport, used to indicate a road going Suzuki standard motorcycle, the only model that still uses this designation in the Suzuki line up is the GS500.

XR - eXperimental Racing. Designation added to GS for Suzukis road legal race replica motorcycles thereby creating GSXR.

Fuck year!

I don't think thats right. I'm more inclined to think that CB means City Bike.

CBR is cross beam racer.

Cross refers to the cylinders being arranged across the frame.

Beam for the beam frame.

Racer, because it was raced.

Thumbs Up

(A CBR also isn't really what I'd call a City Bike either. A hornet or CB 500 is a city bike, a CBR600 is not.
