instead of the crank being round like in the mito engine they are more like a cheese wedge. the weight is removed from the side of the connecting rod therefore no need for a balancer, which sucks out some power.
anyone done it before? |
it needs to be circular because of the diplacement in the bottm end,
eg if there is too much volume then it becomes harder to get all the fuel/air to the top end for combustion,
on some 2 strokes the bottom end of the crank (oppisite end to where the crank pin is attached) is thicker and acts as balancer,
i assume this is the case with the mito as well,
but it also requires additional balancing by way of an extra shaft because of the revs,
you can remove them, as some people do on moto-x bikes but you can't rev it as high with out it shaking it self to peices,
the balancer doesn't steal power, like a heavier flywheel it also smoothes out the revs and makes the power more managable,
if you want it to rev more freely, lighten your fly wheel, ____________________ the humans are dead

Hi
Not sure on reducing crankcase volume. It could be done easily with light plastic stuffers if required, and reducing the crankcase volume to increase the crankcase compression is meant to give a peaky power delivery with plenty of the mixture going straight out of the exhaust.
Balance shaft does absorb a tiny bit of power, but you make that up in lack of vibration which enables you to make everything else lighter. Race use they might take out the balance shaft, but then the bike is less likely to do enough miles for the vibration to be that much of a major problem.
Plenty of 4 strokes use balance shafts.
All the best
