Thought this looked really good. Why do a lot of people dislike these bikes? They sound great & when done up a bit look really good as well.

They sound and look boring. When done up, they sound and look boring, but more loudly.
They also ride quite 'boring' too.

Good for learners though.
(I learnt the most racing one of these and brought my wheelies on decently too, though that's not what people usually find them good for learning.)

I found mine terrible for wheelies, they are boring bikes though.

It's a budget bike and you get what you pay for but it's not all bad. I got mine as a first-time sports bike (by way of riding position rather than power) after trading down from a 750cc IL4. I've found it to be pretty nimble and quick, for my riding style anyway.

Don't think much of the curvy ones though Sick

Shocked

very easy bike to wheelie

and they are a good budget bike, half the price of a sports bike

if you find the sv a boring ride you obviously can't ride that well-the engine is torquey for the size it is,saying there slow-says more about your riding than the bike.

Gear a sports 600 with 50cc less the same as the SV and it will have more torque at the rear wheel at any point I'd be willing to bet. Torque figures listed are similar to the same sports 600s with 50cc less.
Can't ride... no I'm not that great unfortunately. Got any lap times on an SV around UK tracks to compare? Smile
As far as the speed goes, well, yes, they're as fast as any other circa 70hp bike with lacking suspension. Even with the stock suspension they can be ridden reasonably fast - but not only will it definitely be the bike not the rider, on the road the issue is they 'feel' slow to many. Riding a RS250 with 15hp less feels a hell of a lot faster and more fun.

watch and learn about the sv-blue is on bcf and you'll see from his vid that in the right hands the sv is more than capable of holding its own.
sort out the suspension and for the money its a great bike-you can't compare a four grand bike with one thats 7-8 grand.
each to there own

Yes, blue's results were a bit better than mine - you'll note I also raced in the same series, but at different times - so I do have some idea of what they're capable of.
I've managed to keep up with and pass litre bikes at Snetterton on a pace day. That just means people were riding the litre bikes slowly, not that the bike it's self was fast.

I can compare a £1k-£2k second hand bike with another one that's a similar price. Or if you're looking new, a £4k new bike with a £4k sports bike.
For the money, even for track bikes, they're not great value - they're only a bit better value for racing, though they still eat their way through tyres a bit Sad.

But why would you spend £silly on one to tart it up like that? That is what I don't understand.

For example, buy an SV for £1.5k, sink a further £3k into it to tart it up - just so it looks a bit different?? - perhaps go a LITTLE quicker?!!? .... I don't get it - personally I'd just buy a 'better' (looking and going) £4.5k bike!! Thumbs Up ... but I guess that is missing the point ... to him the challenge/enjoyment is to 'craft' something. So good for him - each to their own!! Thumbs Up ... I have always been more of a rider than a ponse though - hence not getting 'tarters'!! Mr. Green

Don't panic, its his hangups, not the bikes ... Bluex5 is just showing the usual signs of small genitalia and lack of luck with the ladies. Wink

I think the SV is a cracking little bike for what it is. But it is only what it is, it is outclassed in each category by other bikes, but I don't know of any single bike that outclasses it in EVERY category!

Oh and I have always wondered why people say they are great beginners bikes. I really don't think they are that easy to ride compared to say a GPZ500 or a CB500 etc etc

Being a big(ish) v-twin adds complexity to the ride, it is harder to pull away and has much more engine braking which can get you in trouble if you are not so hot with the gear changes, plus with the standard brakes and suspenders not being all that, it is not ideal!! Shocked

Because in the UK's motorcycle arms race everyone has to ride a sports bike, so a fairly low spec sports bike must the right thing to start off on, right? -Before moving on to Fireblade 2 weeks later....Even if most people ride bikes that are far beyond their skills and only get them out on sunny days to blast along straights and bimble around corners.

I've not ridden one, but I expect that the SV650 is a pretty good bike, even if the early one did look oddly bulbous.

Most bikes are faster than the W650, but not half as handsome! Cool

Borrowed my little bro's SV when my bike was incapacitated by cack-handed thieves, and I thought it was fun to ride. Not a comfy bike though.

Well I've had the Raspberry (sv650) for nearly 8 years now, and I had her styled to my taste...she is a head turner (even after all this time), everywhere I go and park up, someone will intiate conversation due to the mods.

She wheelies easily. Too easily. And is comfy enough, although the distance between seat and pegs is a bit of a squeeze for me as I have long legs (no Nick, still haven't done anything about it!). I have toured all over the UK, and have clocked up 29k.

But I am not a speed freak, I don't really go everywhere fast. I find 85-95 perfectly ample speeds for me thanks. Thumbs Up

Got an SV650N K1 as a first bike and love it.

Does everything I need, keeps up with most people I ride with and suits me.

I don't pretent its a sports bike, just fun, cheep and easy to own.

For the price I paid 2nd hand, I think its a good bike.

Do fancy trading up at some point, but cheep insurance and low running costs make it hard to justify atm.

Help me jebus, if someone did that to my bike I'd kill 'em!!!!

I don't see the point of modding like that, manufacturers employ design teams to design nice looking bikes, then some talentless oik decides to 'improve' it. Confused

As for SV650s, I used to work with a woman who rode one and she was a proper bitch, they could be the best bikes on earth, but for that reason alone, I'm never throwing my leg over one...

i really like mine, i have done loads of mods to it but even if i had a cbr1000 i still would have loads of mods on that too. the sv650 in the first post is ok but i dont like the frame colour myself but the rider will thats why hes done it, people dont mod bikes to please every body else they do it to please them selfs so how can anybody slag a bike of if the owner has modded to how the like Confused

as for how fast they are mines does for me does 85-95 with ease and not many place you can go much faster without mr pig trying to take your license anyway
