kick starter is sticking

was having a few problems with electric start (battery etc) so decided to try the kick starter...
when i tried it the kick went down to the bottom and then stuck....
i had to give it a nudge back up to the top of it to go back up
so this is y i think its sticking...
sometimes it doesnt even want to attempt to go down no matter how fast or hard i kick it etc
any suggestions how ti should be or what the problems could be?
