Wireless Network advice...

Installing a new wireless network due to some issues with the current one and also as we now want Wifi in the workshop at bottom of garden.

Can anyone confirm if this router and extender would be up to the job, or reccomend better alternatives...

Garden is approx 150-200 metres long, house is probably around 40 metres. Main wireless router would be in the house.. I'm thinking we'd need 2 extenders down the garden in order to get a decent signal in the lower workshop?

Now, I do have a cable from the house down to the 1st building where extender 1 needs to be, as I think having as much of it wired as possible would provide a better more reliable network... I'm not sure if the extender I've linked to has a wired port as well though ?

Would it be best to get 2 of the Router/access points and just 1 extender? would cut costs down a little bit as well.

Only caveat is that it must have a VPN pass through as we need remote access to the office computers.

Have a look at 802.11n wireless, instead of g - the range is much increased and there's a (slim) chance you wouldn't need any extenders.

Would they work together with 1 as an "extender" ? I'm wondering if it's even worth running the cable between the two. I'm not convinced that the one "extending" will actually reach to the lower shed though... so potentially need 3, but of course will go for 2 first and see if its good enough.

I've no experience with extenders/repeaters I'm afraid. Unless you're in a rush I'd try and unit on its own and see how far the signal will go... You never know you might be able to save a few quid!

If you have mains down to the workshop how about running the network over that?

Buy a 20 quid Lnksys WRT54 from ebay, stick dd-wrt firmware on it, turn the xmit power upto 250mW and bish bash bosh sorted.
