Does revving a 600cc engine when it's cold to 3000 or 4000 rpm damage it?

Thank's.

Hi

More revs = more damage when cold (ie, oil possibly hasn't got all the way round, oil is thicker and all the clearances are screwy until things have got up to their operating temperature), but I wouldn't worry about 3~4k. Rule of thumb to me is treat it like it is running in and keep under half max rpm.

Choke revving it to 5K immediatly (when the oil has had no chance to get round the engine) when the engine starts is probably far worse for it.

All the best

Keith

Depends on the engine. 5k rpm on my 650cc bike would be about 2/3rds of the redline. Not sure 'should' is right for 5k rpm really.

For a four cylinder bike, 3-4k rpm seems fine.

Easiest way is as close to tick over as possible without stalling the engine, wait until the engine runs nice and smoothly and the choke smoke-condensation etc stops coming out of the exhaust and the engine feels warm then go, in an ideal world.

Like others have said the rev range of bikes varies massively depending upon engine type and purpose so fairly close to tick over is a better guide.

If if I choke rev to 3-4k on my 400 twin I get rewarded with plumes of blue smoke out of the head and pipe Rolling Eyes

If I'm very careful with the choke and keep it just ticking over then theres no smoke at all.....

I think I know what is best for the engine.....

Saying that thought the bike is high milage and pretty shagged....

3/4k will be fine on a 600cc IL 4.
