I`dlike to hear your views/experiences on what it`s like downgrading bikes.
It could be that you`ve had a "flash" bike then got something dull and basic....or you`ve had fast bikes then gone to something slower.....or a combination of all the above.

cheers

I went from an fzr1000 to a zzr600 and I really prefer it. Not exactly flash but definitely a sizable chunk off the speed front. It's probably more due to the fact that the yam just didn't seem as alive as either of the kwaks I've owned than anything else though.

I don't really see it as downgrading, more of a choosing a bike for the current situation.

In my yoof I got drawn into the top trumps game, and having something that could hit 150 was a blast, but realistically the majority of my riding is under 80. Like a sad old git, I'm more turned on by MPG than MPH now, to the point of seriously considering chopping the CB500 in for a CG125, but I'll probably compromise on something like a CB250RS.

Although I also fancy a ZZR600.

Depends what you mean by 'slow and basic'... the two most fun bikes I've ridden have been an RS250 on the road and an KTM EXC200 off-road. (Ignoring any decent setup bike on track.)

I'm not really bothered by looks of perceived status - well, maybe the opposite and would prefer to show people up on and old tatty bike than on a new expensive bike that *looks* fast Smile.

Any bike can be ridden fast - it's the bikes that make me want to make full use of the bike that I find most enjoyable, not out right ability. Ie, ridden a very capable CBR600RR, but found it lacking as it didn't inspire me to (ab)use it.

I bought a CG125 a year ago, don't ya know. Changed my outlook on biking in the sense that performance specs, acceleration and top speed, etc are pretty much irrelevant to what I enjoy about a bike.

No specific bikes in mind but more to do with riding something that`s not as "high spec" as a modern machine.

For example....if all my other bikes were high spec "race reps" with the best suspension, handling etc etc am i really gonna hate riding something that`s "less well equipped".
How bad would it be for me jumping on older CB500s,GS500s,divvys etc etc after owning modern superbikes and supersports. Question

Not really looking for fun factor though.Just a commuter i can comfortably live with everyday without being pissed off all the time coz it`s a shit ride and needs loads of mods to bring it upto scratch.
Status and image doesn`t concern me either...(not with "this" bike anyway)..lol Wink

That would depend on how much of the high spec "race reps" abilities you were using. If you were riding them on the edge, yes you'd be bored. If not, you might be surprised.

Honestly...i`ve never come close to using any of my other bikes full capabilities. If i`d tried to on the roads i`d be dead by now.
I bought them for their looks, handling, braking, acceleration, torque, ride etc etc...wasn`t interested in riding them flat out at their limits.

I can sacrifice the look...but i NEED all the other things i just mentioned if i get a cheaper older bike.
So...would an older bike deliver?

I'd probably look at an SV650 over the CB500, if you were looking at having more than an A-B commuter.

That`s one bike i couldn`t even consider.
It`s a wanna-be supersport and costs too much for what it is and what it offers. If i get a more basic bike,it`s gonna be something cheaper than an SV and it`s only gonna be used as a workhorse.

if i got an SV it`d just leave me craving for a "proper" sports bike.

Do up the suspension on the SV and keep the brakes in good condition and they're every bit a capable bike - see how close the minitwin lap times are to 600cc sports bikes with 40-50hp more.

Can get one from about £1k which is pretty good value I'd say.

My bike prior to my CG was a CBR600RR8 - bit more of a jump from one to a CB500.

What are you looking for in your 'downgraded' next bike?

The essentials would be:
Good brakes.
Engine capable enough for quick overtakes and motorway speeds.
Comfort
Reliability/decent service intervals.
Price (cheap as possible)

^^Those are the main ones.
If i could get decent handling and suspension too that`d be a bonus.

If i sell up and downgrade it`s gonna be for practical reasons and the bike will only be for commuting. Its top speed,0-60 times, and its looks, don`t matter really as long as it`s in reasonable condition.

I'd look at an older sports bike in your price range - ie G/J model zx6, similar model ZX9s, Thundercats, fireblades etc. Bascially to what ever your budget is.

Thundercats

Few questions:
Do they have the same riding position as sports bikes?
Are the bars "dropped" or more raised/normal?

Been having some problems with my wrists/back/forearms on the aprilia so deffo not looking for anything else that`s "arse up...head down".

...and what kind of price should i expect to pay for one in reasonable/reliable condition?

cheers

They are still 'sports' bikes and even won WSS one year. However, compared to modern sports bikes, the ones mentioned have much less 'extreme' riding positions.

Think in that regards, it's a case of getting on some and seeing how they feel.
