Okay well I have a couple of queries.

Winter -

Is there anyway of getting through winter and still have my hornet 600 looking like it does now? Clean downpipes, not much rotting elsewhere either.

I took the GPZ500 through the last winter and although it wasnt perfect when I bought it, it sure as hell gave me some troubles... Downpipes fooked, loads of things started going wrong, stubborn starts, the lot.

I do have an 05 plate CG125, that I fixed as it had been crashed, but I cannot see myself riding it knowing I could be having all the fun on the Hornet, it also seems pointless paying to insure a big bike if im going to use the littlen!

My next querie, next April I have thought about upgrading to a bigger/better bike.

It needs to be faired, I was initially looking at getting a firestorm but they have the same problem as the hornet, tank range!

I then looked at SV1000's but from reading reviews although they are good VFM they have been reported as being too small.

I then looked at Fireblade 900's, they do look like good bikes, and all the reviews seemed to be good. But alot of the used ones on ebay look a bit dodgy, I am also unsure if I need so much power at only 19 years of age.

I then thought about getting a CBR600F/Fs. Although not much of an upgrade, they do have the all essential fairing, tank range is alot better, I prefer the look of them, and they are slightly quicker. The only trouble with finding one is the mileage, they all seem to be so darn high.

Id be looking at a 2000 aged + model, perhaps fuel injected?

I seem to rack up mileage like nobodies buisness.

I've had the hornet since april 2009, bought it at 5.7k miles, it is now showing over 11k!

I don't know what to do!

Sorry this is such a drawn out post.

Thanks for looking,

Tim.

I also have a Hornet 600, it had done about 3k miles it now has about 8k miles on the clock. I intend to keep it for a while before i move onto a bigger bike, i will also be taking it through the winter.
I've had it since last february and rode it through that years winter and its still fine, it got the typical muck from winter but i just made sure i kept up the cleaning.

Use the CG on the really awful days, and save the hornet for the odd good winter day. Also, ACF50.

Low power bikes make great winter runners. The weight means you can save them when they slip from under you, and the lack of power makes that less likely. They are also nimbler for filtering as the traffic picks up in the winter months. CG is also cheaper and easier to look after. Thumbs Up

Clean it well and coat the whole bike in ACF-50. Don't wash it till spring - you will be surprised how unmarked it is.

Doesn't the water wash the ACF 50 off? How many cans will I need to make a good coat of it?

I rode my CBR through winter a couple of times a week and it lived outside without a cover for the whole time. No detrimental effects to speak of rust wise; that's the good thing about Hondas Wink

I have posted this a few times ... so apologies to those that are reading this mantra for the 17th time... but:
Prior to winter (now?):
1) Remove any fairings , rear pipe, general body work such as seat etc.
2) Clean bike thoroughly with a good detergent/bike cleaner ... use a toothbrush to get to those hard to reach places.
3) Thoroughly rinse the bike with clean water ... and ensure it dries fully (run it for a bit to make sure water is evaporated out of the nooks an crannies of the engine)

4) Get can of ACF50 and a clean rag .... start at one end of the bike .... spray ACF50 onto section of bike (swinging arm?) and rub over with rag.
5) The rag will eventually become saturated with acf50 ... and you can then simply spray onto the rag and keep wiping .. or spray in hard to reach places and wipe.
6) Dont worry about excess ... just wipe it up with the rag.
7) Use rag only for acf50 application (I keep mine in a plastic bag)

You will find that:
a) There is often enough on the rag to do lots of the bike (I am still on the same can of acf50 after 4 years)
b) Use it for plastics .. the lot .. the whole bike (NOT disks or tyres)
c) Takes half a day to clean and then acf50 the bike properly.
d) However, Once done you wont have to re-apply until after winter ... rain and crap doesnt remove it ... it bonds with the surface (to an extent) and is only removed by washing with detergent / scrubbing.

So its a twice year thing .... Once before winter... then after winter clean bike again and re-apply for the whole summer.

My R6 is run all through winter .... rain, salt, snow (ish), sleet .... and still looks like this:

Move over Shaun .. there is a new comedic talent in town Smile
I am available for stag do's and hen partys !

The ACF50 costs quite a bit... £15 a can or so ... so not technicaly necessary to wipe it over... but financialy it makes sense.
You only need a thin smear/layer anyway.

They use the stuff to protect aviation frames from corrosion... its good stuff.
