A brief search revealed that unlike cars, bikes are not subjectd to standard insurance groups.

My initial thinking that 125's would be cheap to insure in general, appears to be flawed with a DT125x actually being quite expensive.

Does anyone have any advice for a cheaper insurance option in the 125 market?

Cheers

Yeah the dt125 is quite expensive to insure because it's a thieves target. I recently did a quote for a Suzuki GN and it was £204 TPFT for me. 19 years old, CBT, 2 years of car license. I think its insurance group four. Anything along those lines will be cheap. Honda CG, Yamaha YBR etc

My problem is I have wanted to get into bikes for a while, but May this year i had my license revoked for dangerous driving (DD40). I dont want to go into it too much but before the usual slating begins, there was no accident, no damage, no other cars, pedestrians or IMO danger, but there we go.

Unfortunately this means that Im now considering getting a bike directly off my ban, on a provisional car license with CBT.

I ran a quote last night:

23 year old homeowner, Engineer in a shipyard
Glasgow postcode
DT125X '04 worth £1300 stored in a locked building and chained.
No car license, prov bike license, CBT
No NCB

That was £660 a year, adding the ban meant they couldn't quote.

I'm guessing it will be cheaper once I have a full car and bike license rather than just CBT, I'm hoping to have moved to a slightly better postcode by then and I could perhaps aim for a different bike till I gain some no claims but I don't know if these will affect the quote enough or whether I've no choice but to stick to 4 wheels for a while?

Cheers

Ran them again

Changing to my parents postcode, a full car license/CBT and a YBR took it down from £67 to £19 per month.

Changing to the "better" postcode I plan to move to as above raised it to 25, but still a lot cheaper than the £67 I first got..

Changing back to the DT doubled it to £50 a month.

going back to the ybr and my current postcode took it to £33.

I guess I'll hold off till after the move, gaining my full car license and probably select a different bike!!

Get the lowest group insurance bike you can and just pay what you have to do. The ban is affecting it but thats all part of the punishment. Sure it will come back down again in time.

The above quotes are without the ban declared, as they wont quote online with that included. I figured it was sensible to find the least expensive combination before adding that into the mix!

Certainly looks like:

City centre postcode = expensive
provisional license = expensive
motocross bikes = expensive.

Since the bike is only a toy for me rather than a daily, it makes sense to wait a couple of months for my full license I guess.

It is probably best phoning up a few companies and telling them about the scenario and see how much they will quote for you with a full license I guess. But prepared to be raped insurance wise for the next year or so.
