Hi all,

A mate of mine as a TL1000R it has just started making horrible noises sounds like crank bearings are shot.

We were chatting tonight about what he could do. I was wondering if anybody knew anywhere that rebuilt engines and how much it would cost? I would be something that would be good to do over a while in a garage but unfortunatly he hasn't got any garage space avaliable. Whilest it is being rebuilt we were wondering if it was worth doing any tuning different pistons/con rods? maybe boring it out a little head work etc.

What do you think? what is the best option? (Yes we have thought about a new engine but would rather referb this one than get an unknown engine in it)

1) Find out if the crank can be rebuilt.

2) Find out how much this would cost.

3) If it can't, find out how much a crank would cost.

4) Price up a gasket set.

5) Take the top-end off and see if anything else has been trashed along with it. Price that up.

Add the total costs of the above.

6) Find out the cost of a new engine.

7) Decide if it is all worth the time, money and effort.

EDIT: As far as I know, unless you are going to do SILLY amounts of tuning, stock parts are fine. It is a strong engine. A mate drag raced one for a season with a nitrous system on it (not sure what bhp but a LOT over standard). Stock engine internals and he's still using it for an everyday road bike (minus the boost).

Thought about the ACCT? (automatic cam chain tensioner).

As far as i am aware, they use the same ones as the DRZ, SV, hyabusa, older gixxers etc etc.

As a very well known fault on the DRZ, the ACCT is known for failing causing your cam chain to 'whip' and almost sound like a couple of nuts in a tin can. Replace with a MCCT for about £25 and jobs a good 'un.

Not saying that it definatley is the ACCT but it is a lot cheaper than getting an engine rebuild that may not be nessecary Smile

I'm a big believer in finding out the root cause before thinking about silly expensive engine work. Start with checking the top end and then work your way towards the more expansive components. You may find it's CCT or even the clutch basket.

Cheers
