Have had a chat to Ste to verify a few things and also tried google.

Here goes 2 pc networking.
Both have ethernet cards.

My internet connection is also ethernet.
I want to set up one pc as say the host/server and the other as a client to connect to that and then the internet.

But my problem is that since there is only 1 ethernet in the host pc, how will i connect the other pc up to it.

Also on the back of the cable modem theres also an option to use USB. Could i cheat and connect one up with USB and the other with ethernet. using the same modem and still get file sharing from it?

I was hopefully looking to use a cheap cross over cable, instead of buying a hub. i think buying a hub will solve the problem, but i'm looking for cheaper alternatives.

Cheers for your help.

We tried it without a hub or anything and it didn’t work so now were using a cheap Belkin router and everything’s working fine.

Take it your on ntl?

I have two network cards in my pc!! the usb adapter that came with ntl im using for the net. The ethernet card in my PC, is being used with a crossover cable to my PC in the lounge.

With the network wizard in XP run on the host PC then once completed, run the same on the Cient.

Just make sure you give them both the same workgroup name!

This is how my network is running, and without problems.

Right,

Easiest thing is to use ethernet. Forget USB, its pants (you can use it if you really want - the same procedures apply). IMO, stick another ethernet card in the host (whichever is connected directly to the internet) they are under a tenner. Also dont use windows network wizard, it is pants tbh.

Ok, so you have one pc with 2 network cards (or 1 card and a USB link to the modem - which is a 'virtual' network card) and one pc with 1 network card.

PC 1.
Ethernet card #1 (internet).
Connect to your modem with the cable supplied with the modem. In windows, set the card to automatically get an IP address and gateway (DHCP). For this card turn off File and print sharing. If you are using XP, you can enable the firewall if you wish, and make sure to check the box to share the internet connection. No other network settings are necessary for this card.

Ethernet card #2 (LAN).
Connect to the other PC directly with a crossover cable, or to a hub/router/switch with a standard patch cable. In windows network settings, change the IP address to 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Leave gateway, wins etc all blank. Enable file & print sharing (if you wish) make sure firewall is disabled for this card.

General (on both pc's): In internet explorer, go to tools > internet options, connections and remove all dial-up connections. Click LAN settings and uncheck all boxes.

PC 2.
Connect to other pc with crossover cable, or to hub with standard patch cable. In network settings, set IP address to 192.168.0.2 with subnet 255.255.255.0, set default gateway, WINS and DNS to 192.168.0.1 (for wins and DNS you need to click the 'advanced' button). Disable firewall, but enable print sharing.

Reboot both PCs....
sorted Cool

Edit: forgot, its best to make sure they are both on the same 'workgroup' aswell. Put any name you want in there, but make sure it is the same on both PC's.

A crossover cable should only cost a few quid, depending on the length. However you could do it even cheaper if you have a spare network cable and a soldering iron Cool All you need to do is remove some of the rubber sleve of the cable, and make a cut in a few of the strands and swap them over.

The ones you need to swap are:
orange with white tracer for green with white tracer
and
white with orange tracer for white with green tracer
(these are TX+ and - and RX+ and -)

bit long winded, but if you're skint its better than nothing!

Scotty - I've got a spare PCI Ethernet card I can send you if you want. Just PM/MSN me your address and I'll get it sorted.

This is the way i'd like to do it.
But i need that USB line.

And i can't seem to get NTL / Blueyonder
to work on XP, tried renewing it, taking out, swaping ethernet cards different drivers. installing new protocols. and i'm getting fuck all.
Any help with that problem?

I'm using 56k at the moment and hell i wanna blow it up.
