Now I'm not talking vinyl overlay, I actually making the parts "from scratch" using moulds of originals. Now that's cleared up.........

Looking at making some carbon fibre parts, watching loads of video's on youtube and researching how its done and it all seems in reach. I'm just looking at making simple non structural things like genny covers, heel guards etc and maybe some fairing parts. I don't care if its cheaper to just buy them pre made as I want to learn how to do it myself.

But just wondered if anyone else has given it a go or is working with it professionally? Where did you buy your material from? Were you successful or did it fail? If so, why? Any general advice you'd give to someone beginning to undertake this work?

Cheers y'all!

Jack

Got a mate who makes parts for RC cars out of CF. Chassis, shock towers and the like. It's a horrid process that will probably knacker your lungs and isn't worth doing unless you are going to do it professionally as a career.

Looks great though.

Just my 2 cents.

We make the actual fibre.

If you decide to make some panels I could always ask if I could have some to send you.

I'm still interested despite the health risks.

Panrider, PM sent.

What exactly is it that makes carbon fibre so strong? I mean, the fibres themselves must be pretty floppy, so what is it that stiffens it?

A standard piece of plastic isn't as strong because it doesn't have lots of carbon fibre to reinforce it.

I guess it's possibly a similar idea to the glass you get in schools with the mesh through it.

Can you imagine trying to tear a piece of plastic with lots of fibres reinforcing it?

Apparently carbon fibre is pretty much just plastic with string in it. But that string is made with the stuff that comes in pencils.

So that would make it very resistant to shear stress and tension stress ... but neither require much stiffness. How do you make wheels out of carbon fibre, for example? What stops them squashing?

Carbon fibre is exactly that - a fibre, not a mat or a mesh.

What most people would call carbon fibre is actually composite.
