if you take a laptop as carry on luggage on a plane, will the x-ray machine thing damage it? thanks.

My friend asked the same thing.
I just said i dunno, and chucked mine through.

Thats how we find out if it damages it.
Came out and it was fine. lol

But then again its not like i would have cared if it came out the otherside in a huge fireball to be honest. his phone is worth a little more.

LMAO!!! I read that just as I took a big gulp of drink......... it ended up on the keyboard Confused Very Happy lol!

Seriously though it will not damage your laptop. The only thing I can think of that would cause some damage is a huge magnet......and even then that will just wipe your hard disk usually Very Happy (stupid magnetic storage Confused )

The X-ray machine will cause more damage to you (radiation) than to your laptop!

Dont know if they are still hot on security, but when i was traveling last year every one with a laptop had to take it apart as much as they could and send each part through the X-ray machine separately.

Just make sure you know how it comes apart.

Presumably if your taking it apart as much as you could, that could only be popping the battery and the cd drive out?

AFAIK, its just to make the opperators job easier and to prove its not a bomb. Thinking about it, the batteries are very dense and would mask what ever is either side of it.

But a battery takes nearly the full heigh available in the laptop anyway Razz so there isnt anything on either side of it Smile

A blade could be slipped in, the batt could be modifed and explosives put in.

My dad had his bag emptied for 4 4cm nails.

Myt mate had his bag emptied for a pair of folding sissors.

They pick up on anything and im glad they do.

You can get on with laptops, half of business class on Mondays would be screwed if not!! You do get warned though not to activate the cd drive on any device be it laptop, walkman etc as this apparently interferes with the radar etc and then you wouldn't need a laptop if you were in a field on fire!!!

This amuses me so much, I work with systems like this, we help aquire equipment to be used in close proximity to radar, MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detector) systems, Navigation aids etc. Can you guess what this equipment is that we have them using within a meter of the units/computers/detectors?

Thats right laptops (amongst other things), interference isn't an issue, so I really have no idea why they still say it is. I guess its just to cover themselves and reduce the minimum risk that could arise.

It's not the laptops themselves that they're worried about though, is it? It's the waves that the CD-Rom (or whatever) laser eminates when seeking through the media, which they claim to interfere with navigation etc. But you should know more than me on this anyway. Very Happy
However, I remember all those years ago when I were a lad, and was deprived of playing my Gameboy on board a flight. Sad

I'm not sure about being asked to dismantle things, but I remember asked to open any conpartments (battery etc) and to show that the device actually worked.

Your correct in that they see the laser reading device as a possible problem, but also the electro magnetic pulses put out by any electrical device is a concern (thus the reason no gameboy for you!). Both of these are so small from a laptop that its silly though.

Granted if the plane was a Nimrod hunting for a submarine and the MAD system was up full and the laptop was sat right on top of it, it would give a small reading - but so would your watch, chains, you etc! But since a normal civil plane wont have a MAD on it...... Laughing

The risk is pathetically small, and I must admit it annoys the hell out of me when I'm told I'm not allowed to use a laptop etc.

The funny thing is even if a device did interrupt the aircraft workings, the thing it would most likely affect would be the way the auto pilot works. It for example it follows roads (if you will) in the air sent by radio waves, so it would be possible for it to knock the course out slightly. This in itself may seem like a big deal, but the fact of the matter is if the pilot/navigator etc are doing their job the course would be continuously monitored anyway!

And have you ever wondered why some planes allow you to use your laptop in business class etc!? hmm fine to use them in business class but your not allowed in cattle class! now would this be to do with the confined space available in cattle class?! Just a thought.

Yup, I've noticed how some companies have advertised power sockets for your laptops etc...but only if you're a rich bastid.
