The Hum

For a few years now, I've been kept awake at night by a low frequency hum/rumble. It sounds like a lorry idling in the distance or loud mains hum, but I've wandered around the area to try and pinpoint it to no avail. The wife can't hear it, nor can my neighbours. Although I have tinnitus, it's not that as it not constant, whilst my tinnitus is of the high pitched 24/7 variety.

Finally did a search tonight to see if anyone else in the area can hear it, and came across people discussing the Taos Hum, which lead me to the wiki article :-

Anyone else suffer from this? Drives me fucking nuts.

Ah, I used to hear this and it used to bemuse me to no end. Sometimes when in a perfectly silent room and trying to get to sleep my ears would start straining to detect any kind of frequency at all. It's just after the point where you can hear your own heart beat that you start to hear an impossible to pinpoint frequency that will just not go away. And worse is that once your ears seem to have found it then it just won't go away.

Not that this happens to me any more. Oh, and I used to live in Hawaii, for one year.

Your not alone, I'm training to be an Audiologist, basically fitting hearing aids, testing hearing etc and a lot of people come into clinic with this sort of thing.

Opinions quite divided depending on the people you talk to as to what it is, if its a form of tinnitus or there is a noise there at some people are more sensitive to. Unfortunately we don't know enough about the way the ear works really to understand it

If its keeping you awake at night, go see your GP, he should refer you to one of us at the hospital for some advice

I had a low vibration I could only hear at certain times. I kept moving my tv about in it's cabinet cos I thought maybe it was resonating. It still kept happening at odd moments though.

Turned out it was next door's surround sound system.

Never heard of the hum before but since moving into our new house last year i have been constantly plagued by a terribly annoying beep! I only ever notice it when i go to bed. I pulled the house apart, ears to walls, walking round the house, up in the loft, head in cupboards and cubby holes etc. in my underpants in the darkness trying to locate it but have never managed to find its source.

Sure its aliens!

wierdly i hear it at work rather than at home, but no one else in the office hears it. i think i've tracked it down to part of the aircon system in a cupboard downstairs, but it still occasionally drives me mental

me too shaggy, drives me round the bend as well.
I can cope with the tinnitus ive had for years but the humming when it occurs is a pain.

I have lost most of my hearing in my left ear but recently there have been a couple of occasions where I can suddenly hear again but it is like a loud speaker and the volume is almost painful, it never lasts long but I cant be arsed to go back for more tests so will just live with it.

Yes, me.

I have only noticed it since I've been living where I am at the moment, as it's a single skin building (converted garage).

I put it down to the fact we're uphill from the docks...so figured the noise was industrial or something.

To combat it, I wear earplugs. Though the problem with this is, when I then wear earplugs on the bike, or at a rally - they are not as effective.

I get it quite a lot Shaggy, I used to put it down to the telly as I only ever noticed it round the house but I've noticed it outside and miles from nowhere in the past aswell...

I work in a metal working workshop which can be incredibly loud at times. I choose not to wear ear plugs (got an ear injection last time i did!), although the noise in my area doesn't exceed the limit in which they become compulsory, i think i really should wear them.

Got tinnitus not (well, its not like the ringing you get, more of a high pitched hum unlike the one described in this thread). Although when im trying to go to sleep, this high pitched noise becomes INCREDIBLY loud and highly irritating. Where as during the day i sometimes don't notice it, or if i do it is fairly quiet to a point where it doesn't even bother me/i don't notice it after 5 mins of doing something.

Haha, how true that is. Unless i am extremely tired (to the point that i could fall asleep anywhere within seconds) then i find i nod off much easier with my ipod in or with the telly on quiet.

I rarely fall asleep on the couch/somewhere other than my bedroom unless i am staying up to drive somewhere in the early hours.

Although because my hearing is starting to go (due to work), having the telly on quiet to me isn't so quiet to other people. My old man's hearing is just as bad as mine but my stepmum's is really sharp so she usually moans to my dad and i get moaned at by my dad

Recently i've taken to playing solitaire on my iPod for half hour or so, its so boring it normally makes me tired enough to go to sleep. Although i am getting quiet good at it now (got 180ish wins now, best time is 2mins14secs with 92 moves )
