I have been at the Ariel Owners Club Annual Rally this weekend.
At the prize giving at lunch time today we drew the raffle, prizes ranged from bottles of wine to a a very nice repro enamel sign and a sat-nav.
I had three strips of tickets last night but all I could find this morning was one Sad . I never win so was very surprised when my ticket came out Smile < I asked what I had won and was told to take whatever I wanted. I have a sat nav but was very tempted by the sign ( It was donated by Draganfly Motorcycles, and they sell for £75) but not wishing to seem greedy I opted for a bottle of crap wine. The raffle continued in this manner with the major prizes only been taken when the rubbish had gone! I did regret not taking the sign though.
Latter in the afternoon we were packing away.
At this point Karma came into play in a way that would seem far fetched even for "My Name Is Earl". A local lad was walking across the field and chatting to my mate Dave, he had something under his arm and Dave said he was not interested. I thought he must be a chavy sort flogging knock off. I asked him what he was selling and he turned out to be quite posh, what he was selling was a genuine sign of the type I had missed out on! It turns out he had fished it out of a lake nearby some years ago and wondered if any one would be interested in buying it as he had seen the Ariels going through the village the day before. Most of the club had departed but he said a bloke had offered him a fiver for it, I offered him £20.
Sold!

It is no later than 1905, The club own one that they purchased years ago for £130 so my £20 was well spent Very Happy . It is very delicate after laying in a lake for all those years and I am going to glass fibre the back to strengthen it (BTW it is 400mm X 400mm).
I still can not believe how I got it and keep looking a it to reassure myself.

If the rust was removed she would fall apart, I will glass the back to re-enforce it and that is all. She is a piece of history and will hang on my wall looking just as she is now

Nice Wali, but just let me add my 2p here. I imagine that glassing the back will do the job, but not be reversible. From a practical point this does not matter, but from a conservation point it is a bit naughty.

There may be a better way (and hopefully not more expensive). Get in touch with one of the big museums who would deal with this sort of stuff (the Transport Museum springs to mind), they may have some advice.

That is, of course, if you care!!

Thumbs Up

Why not use it as a template for your own repros?
Certainly the paintjob on the original looks better than the repro.

Just a thought.

Why not put it between a bit of wood and glass?

Like one of those weird things people hang on their walls... Picture frames I think them call em.

Two pieces of perspex and some spacers, use the plate as the meat in the perspex sandwich, spacers just to make sure ther is enough room to fit the sign in without squashing it, bolts at each corner of the perspex.

I had my mate over today and that is very much like we intend on doing. I can still not believe the string of events that happened yesterday. That thing is so incredibly rare, I have never seen another one.
Oddly this still exists in London, I found it about 10 years ago and it is still there.

Love it, I like old sinage. I only have replica old signage though Crying or Very sad If I had enough money I would have the real deal like you. Looks good on the wall, I would prefer the old one, rust and all! .

If you like replica old signage the pub over here called campus has about 1000 signs all over the pub. Along with shark heads, half cars and other rediculous things.

But i have to say that sign is awesome from now on i'm looking out for stuff like this.

Just got this picture of my mate Jerry.
Condition is slightly better than mine but not by much, if you close up on the TR corner you can see the price tag ( of course this is what he wants for it, the real value will be less but I am still chuffed)
