Ford Mondeo Mk4

Considering getting one of these soon(ish).

Anyone have one?

If so i'd like to hear any opinions on them or advise on things to look out for when shopping around.

Mk4=2007 onwards. They are good cars generally but i would avoid the diesels for sure. Are you buying a newer car with high miles or looking for an earlier one?

Lovely cars, that is if you are talking about the 2007 ones onwards. I probably prefer the Insignia, however the Mondeo is a very comfortable car. I personally wouldn't recommend the petrol, you get the 1.8 and it will be sluggish and uneconomical, get a larger one and it will still feel sluggish and even more uneconomical.

The 1.8 diesel does a good job, but i'd prefer the 2.0 diesel which has a lot more poke. The torque on them is really good, but the 1.9 CDTi insignia feels more powerful.

2007+ yes. I have been looking at both petrol and diesel but with a preference for diesel as they do much more for the gallon and the bhp doesn't seem too different on the 2 litres. Mileage for the money I am looking to pay is around 30-50k. But my searches have only been brief while I weigh up other options.

Why do you say I ought to avoid the diesels though nb?

The diesel engines fitted in the previous model mondeo 2000-07 are notorious for injectors playing up and fuel pumps failing all of which costs a lot of money to sort. Admittedly its a newer shape car but from what ive seen the engine is still the same as it was in the mk3 mondeo and probably uses the same gearbox which has a habit of chewing dual-mass flywheels.
The petrol engines in the mk3 engine also had a habit of dropping its inlet manifold butterflies/valves into the engine....
If you do buy a diesel it might be an idea to get an extended warranty with it if its not still covered by the ford one.
Take a look on honestjohn.co.uk, you wont see too many problems with the 2007 onward mondeo because most of the cars are still in the 'dealer network' getting serviced, but take a look at the previous shape mondeo which shares 95% of the engine and transmissions if not 100%.
You never know, they might of fixed them all by now!?
In the garage i work at we all own new fords, but nobody has a diesel.

Thanks for the info nb. As it goes my dad has a mk3 2005 2.2 diesel that's done about 100k miles and it's never had a problem. Before that a 1.8 mk1 mondeo that did about 250k miles and the engine never had any major problems that i'm aware of.

So i'm quite surprised to hear they have that kind of reputation, never the less i will be making sure to do some more research on the matter.

Mileage (for the money I am looking to pay) is around 30-50k. If i had that much to spend on a car i certainly wouldn't be looking at a mondeo.

FWIW at work we haven't had any problems with any Mondeos, diesel or petrol and i've seen some going over 30k now. These are rental cars as well and you know how customers (and staff ) drive them.
