 |
|
Just been offered this by a mate for £320 its 4 months old with warranties and receipts. What you guys think Good deal or a lemon.?
Sony Alpha A200 with 18-70 sony lens
Vivitar 28-210 lens (minolta/sony AF mount)
As said its like new only been used a handfull of times with all the manuals books software ect.
Ive wanted one for ages but i know feck all about them. He has said its a good entry level camera and the pictures i have seen from it are great.
So what do you think?
Thanks in advance for any advice ____________________ DL650 Vstrom 2004

There's plenty of on-line reviews (e.g. clicky here, or here or my preferred review site here).
| Steve's Digicams wrote: | ...Instead of only releasing one camera in this class each year to year and a half, camera makers like Sony are producing two or more. This, coupled with falling prices has made it quite difficult for the amateur or novice users to decide on which model to buy; especially if they are just making the jump into the dSLR world. The Sony Alpha 200/DSLR-A200 is a worthy competitor in the entry-level market, offering awesome image quality, robust performance, great ergonomics and loads of useful exposure options. One feature that stands out is the Super SteadyShot option. While many manufactures (Panasonic, Canon, etc.) are starting to offer stabilized lenses with these dSLR kits, the A200 features an effective anti-shake system that works not matter what type of glass you are using. This means many of the other models in this class with require you to purchase more expensive image stabilized lenses to achieve the same level of low light shooting performance. That said ... I highly recommend the A200 to anyone who is in the market for an affordable and capable consumer level digital SLR. |
However, I agree there's no substitute for actual hands on user comments.
Sadly I can't do that as I don't have one.
However, I did look at the Sony range before I got my (now old) Canon 400D. I remember discounting the Sony on the grounds that it didn't do anything better than the Canon, the Canon appeared to have more choice in 3rd party lenses and the Canon was more suited to sports photography.
My personal comment is that if the reviews are listing it at £400 then with the extra lenses appears a good deal. If it's what you want and you can afford it then why not. Better a bird in the hand as they say. Plus life's a bit short for saying wish I'd taken that opportunity after the event. You can always sell on if not right for you and put it down as a learning experience.

Trouble is the Sony is an entry level camera (much like my Canon 400D).
If you want to go pro then you're looking at minimum the likes of the 40D or the equivalent Nikon (D 100 series, 300, 700, etc.). Then you're into a whole new ball park regarding price, £1000s not £100s.
FWIW Canon numbering, the lower the number of digit(s) the more professional (i.e. more expensive, heavier, slightly more features that you may not use) the camera, Nikon numbering is vice versa to this.
Don't confuse a SLR with pro(fessional) kit. The entry level stuff is great when you're on a budget and can build up a collection of lenses that'll fit the more expensive camera bodies if, and when, you need it.
