Gnostic Christianity...

Anyone ever heard about it?

I stumbled across it today and its much more interesting than "normal" christianity....


Theres a good bit of variation in there, proper job!

Don't know a huge amount on the subject but certainly seems worth a bit of further reading...

I just finished the new Dan Brown book which has an interesting view on christianity. Personally the whole idea of organised religion is rediculious. Why follow ancient doctrine that has been rewritten and translated so far they can bearly be recognised from what they originally must have said.

I believe most religions are founded with a good idea, but greed and the incorparation of other beliefs and cultures dilutes it so much the bible or whatever isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Bear in mind there are a few religions who practice strict informational hygiene on their holy texts, certainly Judaism does and I seem to remember there are strictures surrounding the Qur'an as well. I'm not saying they're any more valid in premise, just pointing out there's far less drift in the basic message.

I was more leaning towards Christianity with that, it is really interesting how the religion has been changed to intergrate new cultures.

I remember watching Bamber Gascoigne's programme "The Christians" (1977), where he approach the rise of christianity from an academic and historical perspective.

I think he focused on the gnostics for part of, or even a whole program.

It's interesting how Constantine chose an obscure middle eastern sect because he saw it as politically expedient.

This was when the gnostics along with the other branches of christianity fell out of favour.

Couldn't agree more...

However, there can be academic value in studying religion from an anthropological perspective, in understanding the human condition. And why we in the west, especially, live in a world effected by, if not built on the principles of judeo-christianity.

It could have been a completely different world had Constantine chosen the gnostic branch of the fledgling religion.

Ah, I had to study Gnosticism and it was very, very strange to me because I was raised in a relatively "normal" church environment so my views on what Christianity (to me) were somewhat different. Not that I didn't know how many types and denominations there were out there but also as said above some of those denominations have definitely bent the religion right out of shape with their greed. Some of them are still fun to be a part of though (I've been involved in pretty good volunteer work for a long time).
