Media streaming from PC to Xbox over your wireless network

Set this up yesterday and it works pretty well. Just thought I'd share as this is a nice easy way to get your whole MP3 or video library from your PC to the Hi-Fi / TV in your front room, and I don't know how many people realise how easy it is.

So no more faffing about connecting ipods up to the stereo etc.

You can also stream HD video (in the HD-WMV format) although this might be limited by your network performace/signal/ inside your house (see limitations).


Requirements:

1. PC with media player 11 and an Xbox with the latest software update.
2. Wireless network in your house (can also be wired, but kind of defeats the object)



Instructions:

Here is the process for windows XP https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/pcsetup/xpsp2.htm other OS available.

Windows media 11 install might be a pain for some because it checks for Windows authenticity before allowing you to install (mine isn't) but that can be worked-around with a simple hack (google if needed)


That's pretty much it. Follow the instructions and you should be away. You might need to make sure your ports are forwarded from the router to the PC (see this page from microsoft )

Limitations

The UI on the xbox is quite basic, no searching for albums by name etc, you have to scroll through, but you can stream playlists from your PC as well as make them on-the-fly on the xbox. I imagine this will be improved in future as more people use it.

Works best when one of your devices is wired directly into the router (either the PC or the Xbox) and the other is wireless. If both are wireless and the signal strength isn't the best, then you might have problems.

HD Video sometimes isn't the smoothest. This depends a lot on the signal strength of your network. Requries an 802.11g network at least ( older 802.11b won't be fast enough for HD video). If you are really keen on getting smooth HD streaming then have a look at this page for some ideas on how to improve it.

If your xbox is near your router its well worth plugging it in rather than wireless streaming. Plays all films / music from pc's shared files without issues. If you have xbox live it even updates any necessary codecs on the xbox.

Been doing this for years, both wired and wireless.

My pc acts as a media server where as the two xboxs (front room + bedroom) are media clients

yeah you can, right trigger to fast forward, right on the dpad skips 5mins and up on the dpad skips 10mins.....

Cheers skluff, this is excellent been looking for a decent way of watching my laptop films on the big t.v. and this is the perfect solution

(only down side is that it wont play .avi files so everything has to be converted to .mp4. No big deal really though)

tversity plays avi files and can be set to transcode on the fly, thought wmp could too tbh make sure your connected to the net as it may need to download the codec etc the first time you try it
