Hi

Went to Elvington today for a bit of drag racing. At lunch time the Victor tanker that lives at the air museum did a high speed taxi run.

Did the Victor replace/supercede the Vulcan?

I remember going and standing under a Vulcan when I was about 7, fooken massive it was!

There were 3 V Bombers, Victor, Vulcan and Valiant.

Victor and Vulcan were used at the same time IIRC (not sure how the valiants were used), but Vulcans were the last to see active combat (black buck).

Hi

Vulcan was the only one to see actual combat I think.

They were all designed at about the same time. Valiant was first in service but landed up having fatigue problems and was withdrawn from service early on. The Victors were converted to tankers (including shortening the wings to reduce the stress on them and hopefully increase their fatigue life) while the Vulcans stayed in the bomber role. Vulcans were used for the bombing missions on the Falkland Islands (they were just about to be withdrawn from service at the time), but used a very large number of Victors to refuel them to get there and back. Victors stayed in service as tankers for about a decade after the Vulcans were withdrawn from service.

Pretty sure Victors ran one bombing mission, can't remember what though, I'll try and see if I can find out.

If you're ever around Cosford, near Telford, then the RAF museum there has a purpose built hanger with all 3 V force planes. Plus it has a Lightning suspended vertically,which is quite impressive. Worth a visit, entry is free (or donation).

The Valiants also started life as high level bombers for nuclear weapons as the Victor and Vulcan. However, following the U2 high altitude plane being shot down their role was switched to low level. You are right. Appears that a pair of them flew a mission in the Borneo conflict between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Thanks, I'll check it out next time I'm going by.

Could you enlighten me as to what actually happened with the (V)Sperrin? Did any actually see service?

I understand that development was cancelled in favour of the V force designs. So didn't make it past prototype phases.

Hi

Not that uncommon for ex military jets. Getting them a certificate of airworthyness to fly is pretty much impossible, but very few restrictions on them doing high speed taxi runs. There are a pair of Lightnings at Bruntingthorpe that do them

There was a program on the v bombers a while back... can't remember if it was BBC or 4oD I watched it on. Found it, although it isn't on the 4oD player any more... but I am sure you can find another version of it else where Wink
