Instead I cleaned my chain and sprockets, lubed the chain, washed the bike and gave her a spray of ACF 50. Muck off is brill, chain is all shiney and new looking, gonna leave it overnight now for the lube to work its way through, no adjustment needed on chain even though I've done about 1500 miles since it was replaced in July, how often do you guys / gals have to adjust yours? anyone else worked on their pride and joy today?

I adjust mine when I sudden hear a noise similar to ron jeremy's scrotum pummelling Chasey Lain's labia... with the same regularity and vibrational force! Usually adjust it every month or whenver I see fit, clean with white spirit/meth/parrafin and off it goes; much cheaper than muc-off! Keep it free of road crap and lube it well, you can go up to 1-2k miles without needing adjustment. Don't overtighten your chain since that's a sure fire way of shortening the life.

Lube the chain probs every week. Clean it every month (white spirit). Havent needed to adjust it for 5k+ miles.

Normaly always take the bike round the block after cleaning, warm the chain up, then lube it while its still warm Thumbs Up

I always lube my chain just before I go for a ride, probably the reasn it flies everywhere didn't think about warming chain up or leaving it to set in, clever.

I did my first DIY 20k mile service (a la Haynes manual) today. Went ok apart from a couple of things. Mr. Green

Arrow Oil change
Arrow New spark plug
Arrow Attempted valve clearances but couldn't get the damn timing inspection cap off (posted in The Workshop about it)
Arrow Air filter cleanage
Arrow Clutch and throttle cables lubed
Arrow Lubed all the pivot points
Arrow Clutch lever free play set
Arrow Brake pedal free play set
Arrow Throttle free play set
Arrow Chain tension and wheel alignment adjusted
Arrow Cleaned the chain with paraffin and lubed it up
Arrow Cleaned the front brake/pads
Arrow Pulled the tank off and checked/cleaned the fuel filter (accidentally dropped the tank and it has a few small scratches now damnit).
Arrow Battery topped up with distilled water (was REALLY low!)
Arrow Full on degrease of the frame with paraffin, clean and AFC50 coating for winter.
Arrow Usual checks of hoses and other components

Still got to do a fork oil change but don't have the correct socket bit for it, so gonna go get that tomorrow. Might do the steering head as I suspect a possible small notch in the bearings.

Just saved myself at least £80 in labour. Thumbs Up

^^Nice 1 neil.martin. I find that it gives me extra confidence in my bike knowing its all my own work. Once paid for a service on my CG and when i did it myself and changed the oil filter there was part of a mechanics rag jammed in there.

Cheers! Yes it is very satisfying although I did make a couple of mistakes. But that's how we learn and all... Yeah I noticed with my battery I don't think they'd been topping it up at all as the water level was about half way, a long way beyond the lower limit mark and the plates were all exposed. Thumbs Down

I'm quite knackered now, basically been working on it all day since 8.30am, finished around 6ish, as I was triple checking everything with the book. I'll be paranoid for my first long ride to work, in case I buggered something heh.

I found i'd been overtightening everything before i got a torque.

Tried to get on a maintenance course but the college crapped out on me...so its back to the oily bible.

Pat
Hoping my bike doesn't blow over tonight

I have recovered my seat. The pillion seat was a different colour to the main seat and it looked shit and now ive fanally sorted it. I think I've done a fairly good job of it so I'm well pleased. Laughing
Bought some material off ebay to use. I found it alot more tricky than I expected but got there in the end. Thumbs Up

Some are, some aren't. Maintenance free ones are often marked as such, with MF on them. They also don't have upper/lower water level lines or a breather hose attached. You can also swap both types on the same bike. Thumbs Up
