Anyone actually witnessed the difference in speed on these types of BB?

Round at a mates in Leeds, saw one mate start a download of about 100Mb (if I have my terminology correct, thats a tenth of a Gig, yah?) on standard Broadband, think it was simply an 8Mb normal package BB, probs pulling down about 3Mb normal download speed.

Was fairly nifty, but still waiting around 10 minutes (bear in mind my figures may not be correct, I aint uber knowledgable)

A few streets away, my friend does the same download (same link/mirror etc)

Not sure of the package, but know its on Fibreoptic cable as opposed to normal.

And oh my god. It was like watching the countdown clock! I think about a min we waited, watching it go like a bullet.

Really impressed Thumbs Up

So whilst not the most important issue, I wanted to know, what info do we have on Fibreoptic cable and how widely its gonna be implemented?

Im fucked, Im on KC in Yorkshire (monopoly fail).
Thumbs Down

fireoptic is provided by virgin etc. although its only fibre as far as the cabinet in your street. from the cabinet to your house its copper wire.

bt is copper wire everywhere. from the exchange, to the cabinet then to your house. they may be touting fibreoptic now i cant remember but anything on this network ends up slower than whats offered by cable/fibre.

There's two types of fibre; fibre to the node (FTTN/Last Mile) and fibre to the home (FTTH). Virgin currently run a FTTB network, where the backbone of the network is fibre and the "last mile" is copper cable.

ADSL lines get slower as the distance increases, due to electrical resistance. Fibre doesn't have this problem as the light travels as fast as, well, light. Rolling Eyes

BT are spending billions on their own fibre network, hopefully reaching up to 40 per cent of homes in the UK by 2012:LINK

Virgin already claim to reach 12.5 million homes, and are expanding the fibre network: LINK

Have not clicked link but BT will never do that in that timeframe, i used to work for the useless fvckers ... !!

Apparantly BT have been doing it for years but changes at the top means they change there mind about it my mate is a BT engineer and has apparantly removed so much fibre then has been told to install new (exactly the same) kit a few months later.

Also this may be abit confusing but Broadbnd is sold by the Mb (Megabit) and data is stored on PCs as MB (megabtye) or at least thats how you see it.

8 Megabits = 1 Megabyte

So buying 8Mb Broadband means the top download speed you will get is 1MB p/s.

i.e. a 4 minute song is about 4MB.

Electricity also travels just a tiny bit under the speed of light. Longer cable runs just mean more impedance and signal loss, as well as being more prone to picking up stray interference (although there are measures like screening, balancing and twisting signal lead pairs) that do a very good job at rejecting it but I'm not sure if BT use this on their copper). Fibre optic cables may suffer a tiny bit of signal loss as light is absorbed in the wall of the cable on the way as it bounces back and forth but they are not affected by any kind of RF or EMF interference, nor an increase in resistance/impedance as the cable gets longer. Thumbs Up

Cheers for that Chris, I got the general gist of that but couldnt remember it off the top of my head Thumbs Up

Interesting stuff.
