Fyi
As my 12 month old RST Rift pants are leaking very slightly in the crotch area i have decided to experiment with the rumours of thompsons waterseal making them waterproof. I have tried nikwax which worked great on the jacket but in very heavy downpours the pants still made me look like i pissed myself, so sunday i got the paintbrush and pants out and covered the area from front to back and in between , and its mon afternnon and my pants still stink next to my desk at work but as soon as we get a heavy downpour i will report back on how it did. the have a very slight milky stain around the area covered but if it works its a small price to pay.

Thompsons Waterseal works well on my tent.
However, I suspect those trousers will only be waterproof by virtue of a thin membrane stitched between the layers. The seam in the crotch area invariably gets pulled apart and leaks within a very short time. The waterseal won't help because there is an actual hole in the waterproof part of the trousers.
The only thing I've found to be totally waterproof are actual waterproof trousers (not bike ones). Plasticy ones like farmers wear are ok, but they too leak at the seams after a while. The best ones I've found are dutch army issue, gore-tex overtrousers. £25 a pair in army surplus stores. Totally waterproof and remain so for years (7 and counting), even when used on the bike.
