Folks.
I have the ingredients but am looking for some methods. I'm leading a group of youths (13-17, probably 10 in number) on Halloween on an overnight hike. We'll be staying at the foot of a dam in amongst a forest beside a disused waterboard house (wood framed, partially boarded up.)
I have at least one older ex-Venture who's going to around to provide some scares (not sure what if anything he has planned) and I also have a digital camera with night vision so they can make a short film.
Anyone have any ideas about ghost stories (they'd need to be pretty graphic) or things we could do to add to the 'atmosphere.' It's already pretty creepy (happily, there is a squeaking tree in situ,) so anything to enhance the dread would be good.
And no, I'm not telling you where we'll be.
Thanks in advance.

I was on a hike once, 12 Kms across woodland. It was extremely dark by the time we finished, and very late. We'd stopped at one point to have a small snack and a drink, and as we set off again, (carrying torches) we could occasionally see the glint of sheeps eyes in the dark as we passed them.
This story, told to me by my mate, shat me up bigstyle, especially considering I couldnt see anyone else in the group as only the leader had his headlight on (one of the challenges - keep together for 1000 metres with only one headlight on)
You can change the words how you see fit to make it better.
"A young girl is left home alone with only her dog to protect her. When night approaches, she locks all the doors and tries to lock all the windows but one won't close.
She decides to leave it unlocked and goes to bed. Her dog takes its customary place under her bed.
In the deep of night she awakens to a dripping sound coming from the bathroom. The girl is too scared to go check so she reaches her hand under the bed. She feels a reassuring lick from her dog and falls back to sleep. She reawakens to the dripping sound, reaches her hand down to the dog where she feels the reassuring lick and falls back to sleep. Once more she awakens to the dripping sound. She reaches her hand down and feels the lick of her dog.
Now curious about the dripping sound, she gets up and slowly walks towards the bathroom, the dripping sound getting louder as she approaches. She reaches the bathroom and turns on the light. She is greeted by a horrific sight; hanging from the shower nozzle is her dog with its throat slit open and its blood dripping into the bathtub.
Something on the bathroom mirror catches her eye, and she turns around. Written on the bathroom mirror in her dog's blood are the words "Humans have tongues too".
People say the screams were heard for miles..." ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Ideally you'd have a few mates who set up camp prior to your arrival, but not at the same sight. You agree amongst yourselves where the "spot" will be. Throughout the evening you tell stories of how satanic rituals used to be held up them thar hills etc, throw in stories of kids going missing/being chased etc.
At some point in the night, around 11/12ish you'll be heading towards the "spot" where your mates will be dressed in black, preferably cloak/gowns, around a fire chanting to themselves, wearing goat masks or some shit. Being as though this will be in the middle of nowhere the kids aint gonna think for one second that its a setup by you, especially since you act as if you are shitting it yourself and tell them to keep quiet.
Of course, at some point you will be spotted, and the satanic cult will give chase, as the kids run away screaming into the night. At some point you will reveal that it was all a jolly good rib-tickler, and much laughter will be had by all, providing the kids didnt shit it that much they continue running until their body collapses, smack straight into a tree, or try and smash a branch round one of the dudes heads.
Theres others things that could be done to enhance atmosphere, but thats just off the top of my head.
I dont suggest that you start handing out drugs to kids or anything, but if they smoked a few spliffs before heading into the depths of the forest, the paranoia would be increased that much one of them may very well soil themselves.
I remember we took a trip up to our local woods one evening, smoked a few cannons, and then went exploring. Boy did we shit ourselves, and you definately start to hear "things" out in the wilderness and see things in the corners of your eyes that you aint sure are there or not.
A good imagination on the kids part and getting into it will also help though.

Just found this.
"A few years ago, a mother and father decided they needed a break, so they wanted to head out for a night on the town. They called their most trusted babysitter. When the babysitter arrived, the two children were already fast asleep in bed. So the babysitter just got to sit around and make sure everything was okay with the children. Later that night, the babysitter got bored and went to watch TV, but she couldn't watch it downstairs because they did not have cable downstairs (the parents didn't want children watching too much garbage).
So, she called them and asked them if she could watch cable in the parent's room. Of course, the parents said it was ok, but the babysitter had one final request... she asked if she could cover up the angel statue outside the bedroom window with a blanket or cloth, at the very least close the blinds, because it made her nervous. The phone line was silent for a moment, and the father who was talking to the babysitter at the time said, "Take the children and get out of the house... we will call the police. We do not have an angel statue."
The police found all three of the house occupants dead within three minutes of the call. No angel statue was ever found." ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Mmm...
I was thinking about going up during the day and setting something up, I don't have the manpower for a full on ritual but something along those lines could be done... Maybe some shoes hanging from a tree...
That was also a pretty creepy story, I'll need to tell it round the fire; it all adds to the sense of dread...
There's also this old wooden building, one of the door panels is missing so I thought I might go in and put some fake legs sticking out into the hallway for them to find...
Any other ideas (that don't involve ending up on a register) greatly appreciated.

Clowns.
I'm not sure how that would work in the woods, I hate them (after reading It + the clown in Poltergeist) but in the woods it would just be a bit strange.
It would be weird if something did really happen though, they'd be mildly worried but would assume it was planned, then it would go into cliche film mode as people began to disappear.
Adding to the cliche, there's no mobile phone reception in that area...
We'd obviously need to discuss this, as with all cliched horror movies there is a definite order to who dies, what order and how. For example, I'd go pretty quickly toward the beginning and I like to think heroically, but probably it'd be in a really stupid way, not a demise you'd want on your gravestone for example.

This situation just begs for a pre meditated theatrical stunt. Set the scene with torches and candles, keep it all low key, don't do anything cheesy at all, but make sure the conditions are rightly creepy. Cobwebs, and darkness, and have trouble with your camp fire etc.
Then at some point in the proceedings, you need an 'actor' friend covered in blood, to come crashing through, screaming...and have the noise of a chain saw or something 'over there in the darkness', getting closer...
If you freak too, and run away, it's guaranteed it'll frighten some of the lads...! And it'll be well funny...
---------------------------------
OR, you could prime them with stories of dead bodies that have been found nearby, and potential ghost stories, of people who go missing. Then - go missing yourself. And hide nearby and watch events unfold. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

anyway, was helping with a camp a while back, like 2 years. we were using trangias out in the woods, long story short, one of the leaders was telling stories and my mate managed to set himself on fire by knocking over a lit trangia onto his shoes / legs. he came running and screaming back into the camp, on fire, whilst they were telling ghost stories.
one of them wouldnt stop crying till there parents came to pick them up the next day. |
Yup, they're Explorers.
In your last paragraph there, the lad who cried all night... We managed this (although it wasn't deliberate.) You can't help but feel strangely satisfied and have the feeling that your work there was done. Well, I can't help it.
Some good idea's, particularly with walking round the old building... I might try it.
They're the usual shower of cynical teenagers though, they'll be expecting something to happen. There are now two different sets of people (who don't know about each other) coming at some point in the evening to spook the group.
I think I'll go up to the site during the day and do some prep.

Too late really, but a few random thoughts...
Get a couple of dim red lights (two leds each in a ping pong ball) get a mate to have these either end of a fairly wide stick held up high with another stick, then moved around gently at a distance.
Similarly, but put the lights in helium balloons - make sure it's really dim so it's hard to make out and done from a decent distance. Then have your mate raise and lower and play about with them.
Set some kinda of sound playing thing up to make occasionally strange sounds (CD player or repeat with big gaps in CD). Not ghost sounds, nothing recognisable, anything not random and not usual.
If you had had the time in advance, could probably automate the above sort of things quite easily.
Set up 'wind chimes', but with different materials. Random dull metal, wood, plastics.
Borrow a police dog and all the kit they use when they do practice thingies where someone has a big padded arm which the dog attacks. Enact a dog-chasing robber scene past kids, but make the 'robber' be wearing bloodied rags and add some glow in the dark stripes to the dog.
Set up a load of fake cctv cameras in a specific area, as if there's someone around who really wouldn't want others visiting.
Some short lived Catherine wheels (cut it down so it's just 5 seconds worth, say) could be interesting - need to start it spinning by hand or whatever.
If you wanted to get /really/ sneaky, could have some good fun sabotaging all their torches with something that cut them off at the same time with a remote signal... though these days they'd just get their phones out I suspect .
A few small (club style) smoke machines could provide some 'atmospherics' for your ghost stories if they don't notice it rolling in. I |
