Hi,

After visiting a local shop I've taken to two particular jackets but none of which have any back reflection and are black (one with the option of grey/red). I'm just wondering if there are any other forms of reflection other than hi-vis jackets.....?

Here they are:

or,

Thanks,
Adam.

You could try an Urban-Glow vest.

To be honest the only time anything reflective is of any use is if you are laid in the road away from your bike.
Remember that in your average SMIDSY is a car pulling out of a junction and these strips rely on light shining at them..... Not going to happen in these cases.
The rest of the time your bike lights & reflectors should be picked up.
HiVis vests are so common now that they don't even rate a 2nd glance and do nothing to make you easier to see.

It makes me laugh when you see bus/lorry drivers wearing them in their cabs..... If you can't see the bus/lorry you should not be on the road Laughing

Iooi - that's not quite correct.

Other car drivers are more likely to notice a hi-viz vest at eye level, than a lower red brake light below. Wearing a vest gives visibility 360 degrees - not just in 2-dimensions from a fixed vantage point.

I do a lot of night riding and I don't see many riders in hi-viz vests either. I know they're not exactly the coolest thing to wear...but maybe it's better than glue-ing reflective stripes onto an otherwise, fantastic black jacket?

Bus/lorry drivers wear hi-viz jackets because they get out of their vehicles, and have to be seen by other bus or lorry drivers on foot.

I am a bus driver and believe me we don't wear them through choice,

we can be sacked for not wearing them,
a typical example of health and safety gone mad

I put some black reflective tape on my lid (which is also black) - you could try that.

Or I'm sure you could find/make some sort of reflective armband - you don't need loads of reflective stuff, just a bit here and there to make you more visible.

So you're less likely to see someone wearing bright orange/yellow clothing than someone wearing black when it's dark outside? You might want to get your eyes checked. By that rationale, there's no point wearing a brightly coloured helmet.

It's just a hassle putting them on and taking them off. I used to work in an airport and we had to wear them to go airside (onto the apron) but when we came back groundside we just kept 'em on.

Colour will not make you stand out any more. Its movement that does. While wearing a vest may help, for personal experiance i found that i get picked up no more in a HiVis vest than in my normal red/black coat, when commuting.
I do wear one when its icey as i want to have something reflective on, in case i'm laid in the road.

In your average SMIDSY where the car pulls out of a side road or turns right in front of you. You could be covered from head to toe in 3M reflective tape and it would not make any diffrence.... As it only reflects the light back.
As the car lights are not pointing at you it will not reflect any light back.

I think far to many people think that because you are wearing bright colours and have your lights on you can be seen better.... Sorry buy your average car driver takes no more notice of you in black or daygloo yellow.
Your best protection is your driving style.....
Remember they are all out to kill you.

I find I see someone in lighter coloured garb better in the dark because what little light there might be shows it up better than black.

Also, won't the ambient light (street lighting, etc) have some minor effect? Sure it won't give you the super reflections of shining a light directly on it, but it should have some effect.

But yeah, in your average SMIDSY they wouldn't have seen you despite the huge bright headlight on the front...

iooi, what if a vehicle is coming the opposite way to the rider, and illuminating their HiViz; the said SMIDSY pulling out from a junction is more likely to see someone wearing a vest don't you think?

not that i'm a huge HiViz advocate or anything, but just because the SMIDSY's headlights are pointing elsewhere, doesn't mean there aren't other vehicles around at the time to illuminate some reflective material....

p.s. i wear black at night. for shame!
