 |
|
I'm currently looking at a 2009/2010 Kawasaki z1000.
Insurance is VERY reasonable considering age, and claim. Comes in at 849 Fully comp with ability to ride any other bike, break down cover and over seas riding.
Bike is looking about 7500 from what i can gather on internet, but i reckon cash in a dealer could be had for the 7 mark.
What are they like as a bike?
Is it worth buying new? Considering i'd keep it for a while?
What are benefits of buying new?
In terms of servicing etc, how often/how much?
If anyone can answer one/all of the questions above, it would be much appreciated.

Never ridden one. Would personally get a 2nd hand earlier model as I reckon the aesthetics have gone downhill on the big Z's of late.

How long is a while? Check the market for 2nd hand models 2-3 years old to assess likely depreciation.
What are benefits of buying new?
You generally don't have to touch the bike for a good 5000 miles or so. Bar minor servicing. You know it's history. With a new kawasaki you get 2 years warranty, 1 years rac cover - whatever that is worth. That's about it really.
In terms of servicing etc, how often/how much?
For my kawasaki versys, 1st 600 mile service was £40, next one at 4000 miles doesn't even have to have an oil change so £100 tops. Valve clearances aren't touched until 26,000 miles but this varies on models. Buy from a good dealer (I bought from lloyd cooper, watford) and they shouldn't rape you on servicing costs.
If anyone can answer one/all of the questions above, it would be much appreciated.

£850 is cheap? I'm not quite paying that on my car and consider it horribly expensive (group 20 car, 2 claims, 3 points almost gone).
I've bought a race bike new once and a road (trail) bike new once.
The trail bike I bought new because the model was a new model and when I put the deposit down they weren't available new yet in the UK, never mind second hand.
There was only one other bike that stacked up spec wise for what I wanted (a very light bike for the off-roading which could cruise at 80-90 to get across continents quickly.) The other bike was very hard to find second hand in the UK; the only one I found had been written off two days before I called.
Even with these circumstances, I still regret buying new; I wanted the bike for a specific trip, but think I should have gone for a less-ideal bike and waited to get this. However, as I bought it before pretty much all bike prices have gone up by about £1k, I regret it a bit less, as second hand prices have been relatively good for nearly-new. However, it's possible new prices may dip or at least not go up for a while. If that's the case, second hand prices are probably going to go down a bit relatively, for bikes bought new now.
Cons of buying new:
Keeping it serviced officially, I used an official dealer to save hassle because I wanted warranty work done too. Official dealer pretty useless.
Depreciation (as I say, to some degree I've saved that, though my bike is worth relatively less as it's been regularly covered in mud.)
Running in, if you follow the book - not fun. If you're the sort that follows a harsher method, less of an issue.
You're probably (I'm not, I crashed mine maybe ten times off-road before the first service) worried about crashing it more, meaning you may enjoy the riding less.
Pros for buying new:
For me, the 'KTM Assist' breakdown service was very helpful when my clutch was starting to go in Spain. Top marks to them for that.
You get that "wow, I've got a shiny bike" thing.
No MOT for a full three years - though that may mean mine has no chance of passing then!
I don't think the "I'm going to keep it for ages" is any reason to buy new - if you let someone else take the first brunt of the depreciation for wheeling it out of the show room, your arguments are still just as valid.
For me, I would look at what other bikes are available too and go for the cheapest one that does what I want. In the 'naked' category they tend to change relatively less. It's worth also considering that going this route would give you a decent lump of cash, some of which could be used to tailer the bike to your requirements. For instance you could get uprated suspension set up for you and a decent custom paint job. |

Thats expensive, max I've ever paid is about £650

Dealers DO NOT discount for cash any more. It costs them more to do cash as they have to pay banking fees, and they don't get commission for selling finance. Seriously, they aren't going to knock any money off.
| Perry wrote: |
What are they like as a bike? | I like the look of the new bike, but its a new version, and at the end of the day it could be terrible. Not likely I grant you, but it could be.
| Perry wrote: |

I bought new and regretted it. I bought a brand new SV650S for £5000 back in 2001. Lost £2000 in 18 months, which is a huge amount considering what I paid for the bike. The bike corroded before my eyes, and I dropped it a couple of times. I'll probably never ever buy a new bike again.
| Perry wrote: |
What are benefits of buying new? | Nothing really beyond the warranty and extras that you get (like breakdown) and the fact that you know the history of the bike.
| Perry wrote: |
In terms of servicing etc, how often/how much? | First service is usually labour free but you have to pay for parts. Usually this happens after 600 miles but different manufacturers do different things. After that its usually ever 4-5000 miles or every 2 years, whichever comes sooner.
If your young and can help it, don't buy new. You'll regret it. You'll get yourself into £7500 worth of debt for a bike that will be worth £5000 max after a few months of ownership. Thats not a good position to be in. My opinion is that loans and finance are bad on bikes due to the frequency of crashing and the possiblity of corrosion and damage (as you seem to risk when owning a modern Suzuki or Kawasaki). Maybe finance a couple of grand, but not the whole whack on a new bike.
In short, I'd advise against it. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

I wouldn't be getting into debt by buying it, just saving as i have a large chunk of disposable income for the next 5-6 months.
Insurance i thought wasn't that bad, seeing as i am 20 in 2weeks or so, haven't got any no claims discounts, and i have 3 points and 1 claim against me.
I wanted to buy new 'cause it would be nice to actually own something new, and have it from day one and know exactly how its been looked after etc, rather than chancing it on a 2nd hand bike that could have been poorly looked after and end up costing me a fortune in the long run as my previous bikes have.
I'd be looking to keep it for 3-4 years minimum, and from reading around they are a good all round bike.
Thanks for help so far though guys, Much appreciated.

If you can afford it, buy it. There is something good about buying a brand new machine that no-one else has abused! Other than that I think G's post summed up most of the pro's and con's pretty well. I've been there and done it (bought two brand spanking new bikes) and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. ____________________ Yamaha YZF-R6 |

I once bought a new bike and regretted it.
Paid through the nose for "official" servicing that I later found hadn't even been done completely (They'd changed the oil and filters and nothing else, for which I payed them £180 a time. Mate had the same model from the same dealers and the tappet inspection covers had never been off it, nor had the coolant drain screw or the fork caps when he serviced it himself two years later). Also the hassle of getting the bike to the dealers and leaving it for a day.
Mine blew its engine while within warranty. Took four months to get it back again.
Had I bought a second hand one, it would have been around a thousand pounds cheaper initially, I'd have spent £120 on servicing it myself instead of £720 and would have dropped a replacement engine in over a weekend after it blew. I'd still have been better off. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Had 4 new bikes and 5 2nd hand ones.
Have to say not much in it. OK you stand a loss on a new bike when you drive off compared to 2nd hand.
But the up side is you know just how its been looked after, and have very little to do to them.
Running in on a bike of that size should not be a issue... Lets face it 6K is going to be way over the legal limit...
If i could afford a new bike then that is what i would go for.
Got a new car this year and there is nothing in the handbook about running it in at all.
So how long before bike engines are the same. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

Just bought a new bike at the start of October.
I was looking at the second hand prices and tbh there wasn't that big of a gap so decided to spend the extra on a new bike.
I got a goodish deal as I paid in cash in full. I was able to negotiate quite a few extras into the deal, got a free 600 mile and 1 year service and I don't have to get an MOT for 3 years, so it made sense for me to buy new.
Plus the main thing, you get bragging rights in owning a shiny new bike...
Would I buy new again? Yes
Would I buy second hand again? Yes
It just depends on the deal and how much free income you have... ____________________ My Bikes: Piaggio NRG| Aprilia RS 125| Suzuki GSX-R 600|Yamaha Fazer Ducati 848

Might aswell go for it, i'm saving abit over the winter to finance a new ducati , might aswell while i still live with my parents, no kids to look after etc
so what if you lose money? thats part of it and there's just as much chance as crashing a 2nd hand bike because you don't care about it as much which can encourage you to do stupid things so i don't see the ' you might crash it' idea being too valid ____________________ 2010 Ducati 848 Dark

i bought a new cbr 6 many yrs ago nice but it got whacked by a car and that was that.
after 7mths it was repaired by there ins but i did not want it after that and lost £1000 on a trade in.
would suggest buying a nearly new second hand bike about 6mths old as there perfect run in and serviced
as for a z1000 i had a z750 and to be honest get a good test ride first as they ain't keepers
terrible finish.
massive depreciation
crap suspension
look elsewhere is my advice or buy one that's someone has already realised all of the above and got shut (should be cheap then).
i like kwaks and have a 12r but these z's are very poor bikes imo and could be miles better if kwak would stop using cheep parts and ultra thin paint.

Very interesting viewpoint!
I love Kawasaki's, but as you say sometimes they can be a poor bike as can any manufacturer's machine, if it's not built properly or using decent quality components.
I might like a Z1000 for myself, but it would have to be an mk1 version that i could sort out and do whatever needed to get it looking good, and make it more corrosion resistant and better to ride.
I suspect that an mk1 Z1000 with say £2k out into it's weak area's would make for a much better bike to ride than the new one! |

Is that supposed to be 'brought' as in brought to this country from overseas, or from Doncaster when I moved. Or 'bought' one? As in paid money... ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |
