First thing to do simply get more battery power to it, use a booster pack or car battery and jump leads to supplement the bike's battery.

already tried the booster pack on it, though the battery was fully charged and new anyway. Sad

Keep trying, if the spark has just vanished as opposed to something having mysteriously broken while it was laid up, the most likely explanation is that the engine is just really hard to turn over after having sat for so long - in which case either the starter is using up all the power from the battery and leaving nothing to make sparks, or the alternator isn't spinning quick enough to make it's own (depending on how the CDI is powered).

Sad electrical things have a nasty habit of mysteriously breaking whenever I am around, I don't like electrics and they sure don't like me. Sad

I believe that the old GS550's are points. At least one that I know is.

Could be that the points have gone all corrodey and now aren't sinking enough current for a good spark.

What year is it? If it is a pointer then at least it should be pretty easy to get a spark back. Lightly sand the points if they are crapped up and then clean them with acetone nail varnish remover !

Then just check the breaker gap and you actual timing should be somewhere close, if not then at least there should be a spark of some kind.
