hi im looking to buy an old model aprilia rs125 and most seem to have had an engine rebuild on them i know that 2t engines need to be rebuilt every now and then but i was wondering if anyone could tell me how often they are needed to be done

hi , they do neeed to be rebuilt if treated wrong but if its treated ok not in redline every gear should last quite a long time.

An old 2t 125 will have been thrashed to within an inch of its life so assume the worst. Find out how many miles ago it was rebuilt and by who. Ask to see receipts for parts or work done if none is available walk away or rebuild it yourself. Piston, rings, crank are usual rebuild items but don't forget to check other things like chain/sprockets, discs and pads, condition of rear shock, fork seals etc as these will cost nearly as much to put right as the engine. Find out what 2t oil it has been running on, should be a good quality synthetic on one of these bikes.
Don't want to piss on your bonfire but unless you know the bikes history be very wary.

yeah i figured that an old one would be thrashed so was thinking to look for one that had been rebuilt recently but would need to know if it was done properly, and yeah i would take my dad along to any viewings because he will know what to look at properly but he just wanted me to find out about how many miles an aprilia 2t will last until it needs a rebuild bet i guess that depends on how its been treated

As far as I am aware you need to check the piston rings at 5,000 miles (so you may as well replace them while you have the top end apart) and you need to change the piston and rings every 10,000 miles.

A top end rebuild if a re-bore is not needed will cost around £60 in parts.

They should be redlined in every gear. Thats the point of two strokes. They need to be rebuilt every 10k ish.

Rebuild on a single cylinder two stroke is easy. What is not so easy is judging if it needs a rebore, and if it is nikasil plated if it needs a re-plate.

RS125 has a nikasil plated cylinder so if it is worn it will need to be replated after a re-bore. Luckily Nikasil is quite hard wearing so if the bore is round and there are no marks on it, it should be OK for a new piston and rings.

Agreed 10K will be needing a crank and piston change. plating on the bore should be good for near 20K if setup right but on the later 123 rotax motors the plastic balance shaft gears should be changed around 10k miles as well........but DO check the powervalve is free and working if getting one of the early models!! these also need changing at stated miles...not ££££ though Very Happy and enjoy as a 125 they sure beat the hell outta riding a 4t 125 if you dont mind a bit of extra work and running costs
