its just the metal expanding and contracting cooling etc

Its an engine thing..probably cooling down after being ragged like a mother

Think it's as simple as the exhaust mainly, or other metals cooling down, and contracting.

It only seems to be four strokes that tick. I don't ever remember a two stroke doing it Neutral

I think it's mainly the exhaust header pipes cooling and contracting in the exhaust outlet. When running they get extremely hot (600+ Celcius - you may even see them glow red), and expand quite significantly.
