Thinking of upgrading my bike after Christmas but would like to stay with a Kawasaki. I've been looking around and quite fancy a ZX9R for that little more power etc.
I use my bike to commute to work and the occasional blast.

Has anyone owned/riden one of these?

Which model is the best to get, C, F etc?

Any known issues with these bikes?

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

have a look on the zx9 sites etc as you will get loads of usfull info there Thumbs Up

i like the big kwaks and as with all bikes they have there potencial faults so check any potential new bike thoroughly Thumbs Up

the tokico calipers will be the main area of concern as they are a pain seizing wise but good if cared for Thumbs Up

if its a cared for one it will be an excellent bike.

some are abused and best avoided Thumbs Down

the 9 is a good bit heavier than the 6 but an outstanding road bike and plenty fast enough and spares are readily available on ebay etc.

think the E models are best Thumbs Up

plenty around so be picky and patient and you will get a beauty Thumbs Up

An E or F model should be a decent 'upgrade' over a F model ZX6.
It's not the sportiest of sports bikes as stock, but fairly comparable to similar fireblades I'd say. A bit more relaxed than the more hard-core R1 etc, so can be more suited to getting about as well as having a bit of fun.

Go for the ZX7R, much more fun. I've had 3 of them. Better chassis than the 9r's in my opinion. Fit an Ohlins shock and it handles like a more modern bike too.

Coming from a ZX6R-F, I had a choice between ZX9R C/E/F and CBR929-954 or 02 R1. It was simply a matter of finding the right bike at the right price at the right conditions. I ended up getting a low milage 929 Cat C for 2.1k. Of the ZX9R's, I would have gone for a 9R-F. They had a raft of improvements over the E, new braced swingarm, engine internals. Shame I didn't test ride any of the bikes for comparison.. bought the 929 blind off ebay and haven't looked back!

I'd personally say a ZX6R J/A model 'feels' faster than the zx7r, though on paper the 7 has more power.
Don't see any reason to go for a 7 over a 9 personally, apart from the looks. Stick a decent shock and some aftermarket fork internals in the 9 and it's a very capable track bike (expect it's fine for most with stock set up correctly, I should point out).

Biggest change to the ZX9 F is the front brake callipers imho? The rest kind of strikes me as cosmetics and marketing sound bytes.

I had an 'E' model and used it for commuting one year.

Great bike only let down by a few points. The brakes easily seize if not cleaned, the paint finish is thin especially on wheels and pillion peg brackets etc., the bike also tends to run quite hot in summer if the traffic is dense and very stop/start. Clunky gearbox if coming from a Suzuki-slick gearchange.

If you do use one commuting I'd recommend Scottoiler FS365 spray every week after a good clean. Thumbs Up Oh and get a green one. Mr. Green

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciated. Done some reading up and it seems the F1-P is the one to go for but will wait and see what comes along at the right price.

FS365, the ZX6R gets regularly BATHED in the stuff, well not quite but I'm sure I've got some kind of OCD for spraying the stuff all over my bike at every opportunity Laughing

Esab, love that ZX7R mate Cool

Are you planning to use it all winter? I tell you what though, I've found that the build quality on the Honda was much better than the ZX6R-F. Not sure if the 9R F would suffer from carb icing on cold damp days since they should have had the issues resolved by then. Whichever choice you make though, the 900's have very large fairings (for a sportsbike) and will keep you out of the wind. Their size makes them a comfortable choice over the distance. You not considered a CBR 954 or are you staying loyal to Kawasaki? What's your budget since if it's about 2.5k, I would seriously recommend a CBR929. Good bikes for what they are.

Think I might use the ZX6R through the winter as I know how to ride that and what to expect from it in the winter (only missed one day last winter).
I've thought about a CBR but just seem to be drawn to Kwaks for some reason, the idea of this thread was to help me decide whether the ZX9R would be a good choice and there's been some valuable input from you guys and I value your suggestions and opinions Thumbs Up
I might see if I can blag some test rides from some of the dealers in my area to see what they're like (CBR929/954, ZX9R) if I can find one at a dealer that is.

The F3 is a good enough bike to go through winter with. Keep an eye on the calipers. It doesn't really suffer much other than for fasteners furring. I guess what I can suggest is to get the bike AFTER christmas when people are looking to sell their toys to pay off their debts! I sold mine for £1200 in january and got my 929 3 days later for £2400 inc delivery. The options maybe limited BUT the prices will drop considerably by about £500. DO consider it and be flexible. In the meantime, get the test rides in.

C2 is quicker than the E from what i've seen on zx9r.net forums.

I recently bought one and love it. I'll admit though that i found my ZXR750 more comfortable and confidence inspiring, but i'm still getting used to the 9.
