ok long story short, im a fudd!! was bored trying to workout how to get the visor off my hjc helmet, completely missed the lever and arrow saying 'unlock', got impatient, pulled at it, and broke it so need a new helmet, looked for a new visor but only one from ebay costs the same as a full new helmet.

been looking and wanted to kno what people think of open face helmets, what the wind noise is like, weather protection etc, example: https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GMAC-STAR-OPEN-FACE-MOTORCYCLE-HELMET-BLACK-XL_W0QQitemZ380143005268QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Helmets?hash=item588249ee54

considered a flip up one too, but the visor on my current helmet always fogs up, so i need the visor open slightly at all times, can the visor on a flip up helmet be opened too or is it just the whole front panal that opens, also noise etc

cheers in advance

Most flip up helmets will allow you open the visor too. As for noise, I can't comment as I've only ever used full face helmets.

Most importantly though, never buy a helmet without trying it on and making sure that is fits correctly. An ill fitting helmet can be just as dangerous in an accident as no helmet at all.

As well as the actual size of the helmet, there is also the shape to consider, some helmets simply won't fit some people. For example, Arai helmets won't fit me but Shoei helmets fit quite well. Helmets come in all shapes and sizes just as peoples heads do... Make sure you get one that fits yours!

I know it's finished for this year but the bike show is a great place for trying on and buying helmets... That's pretty much the only reason I went there this year and I'm chuffed because I now have the best fitting helmet I've ever had.

Seriously, go to some bike shops in your area, try a few on and buy the one that fits you best. A helmet is the most important bit of safety gear you have on a bike so get a good one.

Agree with the above, i can say from experience that some flip up lids can let in a ton of noise; I used to have an ill fitting large flip-front lid which i recently replaced with a smaller and better fitting lid, which lets in very little noise and rarely fogs up. I also like to think the one piece full-face helmet design might be more resilient in the event of a crash. but this might just be my imagination.

you can keep the visor open a few millimeters to help with the fog, or even try one of those 'Foggy' face mask things that you wear underneath, i think they're only about a tenner. as for the wind noise factor, if you aren't using earplugs, start doing it! it makes the world of difference.

i noticed Hein Gericke had a sale on lids recently, you might still be able to pick up a decent brand lid on the cheap in there (or wait til after xmas to hit up some January sales action)... might be worth picking a brand that have replacement visors cheaper on ebay, you're not the first person to have broken one attempting to remove it!

Thumbs Up

Just a ntoe on those foggy masks - I (and others) have found them to be fairly useless. My personal choice would be a pinlock insert for the visor.

i have a breath guard for my current helmet, but cant get the helmet on with the breath guard, probably down to my huge head!

think its down to two, either a flip up or a standard full face, dont want to spend too much money so arai and shoei etc are out of the question, and i kno what you mean, i dont imagine a flip up helmet would have as much protection as a full face, so fortunitly my bike isnt what youd call swift

been told about j and s in hamilton, will go down and try a few on, anyone know any other good shops around glasgow?
