BCF - I'm new to this so please bear with me.

My son's Gilera Ice (50cc 2 stroke) won't start. It was fine for about 2 months, then became more strubborn over the last couple of weeks, needing a kick rather than the starter, but has now given up.

I have changed the plug (NGK fitted), the cap and HT lead, there is fuel and oil getting to the carb (the plug is wet) and I have cleaned the jets and checked the float chamber. The battery is fully charged and the starter and kick both turn over healthily.

Finally, there is compression and there is nothing visibly wrong with the piston and rings (but I have not had it tested for compression).

The spark however is not great - it's a weak and thin blue line that "dances" about between the electrodes.

It is not even trying to fire, but I believe 2 strokes are very sensitive to the strength of the spark?

My next line of attack will be to change the ICU (I have checked the contuinity of the wiring between it and the starter switch).

Does anyone have any better ideas - I'm beginning to run out of them?

Thanks in advance.

UPDATED

Just had it tested at Vale Motors in Middlewich Cheshire and it would appear to be a compression problem. Rings have blown, needs new piston and chamber linings. Probably caused by a combination of a poor fitting power pipe with air leaks (thanks son) which de-resitricted it, followed by use of sub-grade 2 stroke oil given the higher running temperature.

Would appreacite a view of costs of parts and labour - have been quoted £265?

Sounds a bit pricey.

Personally I'd buy him this:

https://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/Std_Barrel_and_Piston_Kit_%2840mm%29.-ref-6433-7509-1823.html

and some tools, and get him to do it himself. Thumbs Up

edit: Do check that's the right one, though.

Thanks BassJunky, very useful.

What is your view on fitting a big bore kit rather than the std set? Is there anything in additon we need to be aware of (changes to the variator or clutch perhaps)?. Any unwanted side affects to be aware of?

Only fishing at this stage, otherwise will go with fitting the std kit ourselves.

Thanks in advance.

+1 on doing the work yourself Thumbs Up

If hes 16, just go for a standard barrel and piston.

Note that you will need a top end gasket set aswell if the barrel and piston kit doesnt come with the gaskets already. Also a bottle of 2stroke ( if you have non left over) Wink
