Quick question, lads.

I can't ride my 2003 NSR125R until march next year because of losing my licence. So far this year I have been giving the engine a fifteen minute run in second gear every week whilst on a paddock stand. Recently, I have noticed that it seems to produce quite a bit of smoke as it is revved even when fully warmed up.

Should I be concerned?

Cheers

I don't think that it's particularly good for the health of your chain and sprockets to be running the rear wheel freely...and to do that regularly for the next 7 months definately sounds like a chore.

Why not put the bike into hibernation instead? Drain all fluids, put in fresh oil, disconnect the battery etc.

I regularly apply chain lubricant and try and keep everything oily that looks like it should be. Why would it damage it free wheeling it?

Because it will be clanging about the place, where as when your riding it can't change from pulling and pushing the chain. but when free wheeling it likes to bounce from one to the other.
or something like that, someone else will explain more clearly.

Well, I think i'll risk it and I can't imagine it will do any serious damage. Anyway, A friend drained his RS125 for about the same period, put all the necessary protective fluids in it and then could not start it for love nor money come the summer. A mechanic later told him that this sometimes happens and that he should have just run a few times a month.

I will get a mate to give it a damn good thrashing this weekend.

How did you manage to get yourself banned? Confused

And the bike will lose alot of value sitting there for one year, I would possibly consider selling it now, and buying something else when your ban is up. That will also mean you are not tempted to ride it. Plus a ban within 8 months of owning a license and a bike means your not going to be insurable on anything over a CG Razz

A bike engine is designed to be run under stress, it can cause various bits to act differently if they are used whith no opposing forces.

If you're running it, best bet is to get someone else to take it out occasioanally... or has been suggested just sell it now and look at somethign else nearer the time.

I've already had some insurance quotes and the best one I could get was £1700 TPFT. A rip off but I'm selling my car and not replacing it so I'll have plenty of cash around that time. It will also drop 75% with one years no claims bonus too Very Happy

I had a word with the garage at lunch who said that as long as I got someone to run it about once a month it will be fine.

Sell my NSR? one of the last uk NSR's ever produced? I think not.[/quote]
