Put yourself in this position and if you can still understand enough by the end of it, tell me what you would do! Laughing

You work in a team, and the whole team works from the same queue of jobs one after another always starting with the oldest first. Some jobs are easier than others, and there is always someone who 'pinches' the easier jobs instead of dealing with the eldest call first. Management largely ignore this, so generally speaking some of your team just get away with this.

Would you:

A) Join in and 'pinch' some of the easier jobs.
B) Just go the whole hog and 'pinch' all the easier jobs.
C) Continue correctly doing oldest jobs first and missing out.
D) Do something else about it (state in the thread).

Oh, and you are monitored on the NUMBER of jobs you do a day... Wink

Me? I do B) and take the piss before continuing as normal again. Amusingly this riles the original 'pinchers' more than anything else! I love office politics...

Laughing

If you also "pinch" some of the easy jobs then there'll be no more easy jobs to do, this will force the others to take the older jobs. This will put everyone in the same boat then.

If I "work in a team" then I work as a team, so would do oldest first.

If others "in the team" were not "team players" then I would certainly confront them regarding it. Might me subtle at first, however if the hint was not picked up then would escalate it.

However as you admit to being one of the offenders......

During break i would have a civil face to face with the culprits and sort a share system out.

Interesting the 2 of you mention the face to face route. Thing is this has been tried before to no avail, the excuses brought out are quite incredible. Ranging from 'oh my pc doesn't work properly I hadn't noticed' to full on complaining about being bullied.

I always find my office a very delicate apple cart, you have to 'act' a certain way to fit in and gain any chance of working your way up the corporate ladder. You start standing up and complaining about things then colleagues start distancing themselves from you. Even though they may agree with your principles, standing out in this way is deemed not a good trait.

I don't like 'pinching' as others do which is why I'll only do that after others have started first, and then I'll overdo it to make the whole thing as obvious as possible to management without being seen to 'grass'. - my morals do stretch this far! lol. But I don't see why I should make my life harder for myself when morals and ethics aren't something your performance is ever based on... Karma

So it's an action list on a PC network? Presumably a basic database system.

Maybe you could have a word with one of the IT support people on the QT and get them to lock the fields so you can only take the oldest job on the action list without a supervisor login?

Or suggest something similar is done to your line manager. No naming names, just say you feel you are being hard done by.

It would depend - you say you are monitored by the number of jobs, but are you paid by the number of jobs? As long as management take into consideration the complexity of them as well as the number, there shouldn't be a problem. If they don't, and purely measure you on numbers, then take every easy one you can get your hands on.

I ran a helpdesk for a software house, and management were only concerned with the number of faults that were open, rather than the age and impact on the customer. I dished the faults out to my staff based on their ability to fix them, the age, and the current political situation for a given customer, so newboy got to fix 20 cosmetic faults in one day, whilst olddog had the 4 week stinker.

I quit the position when I had a new boss telling me that since we could fix 30 faults a month, it only takes a day to fix a fault.

Put it this way, the database we use is basic. However it's a European system (meaning there's no English involved within the database and it's looked after abroad). The company is multi-national and therefore requires about 20 levels of communication to get ANYTHING changed within the system.
Attempts have been made to change simple things before, like swapping fields, setting up queue's etc and these have failed. We're part of the company stuck out on a limb in the UK and have bugger all support for what would help us do our job.

The only way to properly ensure the team do as they should is to employ someone to sit there and dish out jobs as they come in. The team know this and also know the company would never pay for this either! Laughing

Various attempts with different software tools have been made to control and record stat's both with jobs and on phone systems - none of these have worked through incompatibility and bad management. No wonder the company is going down the hill...

Also, I just started this thread as a light hearted look into how people would react in an office environment when faced with a difficult team, I didn't really want to get stuck into the nitty gritty of why my company personally can't control this properly. Personally I put it down to very bad management, not that I know how to get into a position to get it managed any better unfortunately! Confused Thumbs Up

We aren't paid by the number of jobs... and management don't take into consideration the complexity of them. For example, we are given a set number of jobs we should be able to do every day regardless of getting stuck on 1 for half the day.

You have SO hit the nail on the head and it sounds like you were in a very similar setup! Thumbs Up Laughing

In that case it's every man for himself. If the management ask why, tell them it's because they monitor quantity, not quality.

Pft, if everyone else is taking the easy jobs, just take the piss and take all the easy jobs. Especially if you've already raised it with the pinchers and management.

Whether it be working at work, or things like working on the bike, I tend to do harder jobs first - makes the easier ones feel like a dos (especially good for Friday afternoons) that way.

This isn't really relevant though Smile

Seeing as if he does the harder jobs then he doesn't get to do the easier jobs ever..only more hard jobs.

Personally I would probably take some easy ones without taking the piss to far.

In this case though I agree with "each man for himself" as it seems to be a shitty environment and situation.

I'd dive into the easy ones to get my quota up then take on the toughest one in the list to prove I've got the nuts for it Smile

I wouldn't either now I know what it's like! Laughing However I'm bad and like winding people up for the hell of it without taking anything too seriously, so I don't get too bothered by office politics. It's funny to see someone lose the plot though which has happened a few times in the last 7 years I've been here... oh god that long!? Shocked

Lol, nah I think you've taken that the wrong way or I've done a crap job of explaining myself as usual! Rolling Eyes

I get my head down and get on with the job, if I'm in a team of hard workers I have no problem digging as deep as the best of them. I already take on more responsibility than the rest of my current team simply by asking for it. I don't get paid for it and don't get respect for it either, but then I don't expect it. I'm just making myself more employable for the future...

When I say I like winding people up etc, it's only those that deserve it. Those who don't pull their weight, who cheat etc. Sure in this scenario in a way I've joined them, but instead of joining them and staying low. I do as many 'easy' jobs as possible, then highlight this to the rest of the team saying anyone can do this (I also do plenty of hard jobs). That way it just stands out a bit more and hopefully makes the 'cheaters' less likely to cheat in future. Thumbs Up

In your case, I'm inclined to agree with Shaggy & Ham - take ALL the easiest jobs where possible and screw the rest; the others will get pissed and realise. Maybe the older ones will get done; maybe management will be informed.

I've got an awareness of helpdesk politics due to the company I'm in. Its funny when they try to attach productivity figures to help desk people.

The new guy who can only be trusted with simple stuff, so deals with lots of little calls, becomes top of the leaderboard, while the guy who knows things inside out and sorts out the tricky stuff, languishes at the bottom Smile

The other side to this was someone who took option B consistently, ended up as a team leader, and then promoted to a theoretically more important job. Supposedly on the back of high figures on help desk (ie the easy stuff)

Not quite sure how true that is.

If your boss is thick go for option B, or if the boss of your boss is thick, go for option B. However, if anyone senior is likely to take a dim view of working the system, it might be wise to take a middle ground between numbers and tricky stuff.
