I like the look of the various 'street trackers' from the like of Deus Ex Machina.

Has anybody built an off-road-lite variant of a road bike like the old British Scramblers?

eg. A GS500/GPZ500/Goldwing with knobblies, high bars, big suspension etc?

There was a 6 cylinder Kawasaki 1300cc trail bike conversion in a magazine years ago. Some bloke who worked in a breakers had bodged different forks and wheels onto it. It still looked like a tank though.

I was thinking more along the lines of an XR1200, but not based on a 1920s bike that weighs about 2 tonnes.

I'm with Ste on this.
However, a couple of manufacturer designed bikes:
CCM FT35:

Highland Flat-tracker:

I don't know if this was ever built, but the specs looked good with their 85hp light weight 950cc twin and a claimed 129kg weight..

About the same as a reasonable performance 125 - I really can't see any excuse for most 125s to weigh much more. My KTM690 has a 'real' no-fuel weight of 138kg (well, a bit more now I've farkled it).
The highland adventure bike is a claimed 166kg, which does compare quite favourably to the BMW 1200GS being, I reckon (figures available I don't entirely trust) well over 50% heavier.

Apart from fairing and headlight (that may have one, it does has rear lights), what else does a bike really have?
Even on stuff like the big beemer tourers, I doubt the stuff like heated grips and speakers weigh much - though the panniers etc will a bit.

depends on the metal and thickness of parts and how its shaped etc that all needs to be taken into account

That was my point - it's not the extras, it's the heavy basics are the issue.
