By far the most 'sensible' way would be to sell it and buy a faster bike - possibly using some of the money you save to pass your test if you haven't.

I believe there are a few mods to make fairly marginal gains, but a metaphor I've used before - it's like spending a load of time and money making a BMX faster, when you could just get a mountain bike that's much more suitable for going fast.

Do you have access to a mineshaft? Mr. Green

As I understand it they're close to as fast as they get as standard. Get rid and go big! Mr. Green

I see everyone's giving the usual "sell & get a bigger bike" advice/routine. Rolling Eyes Why peeps just can't answer the question is beyond me.

You could try mucking about with your sprockets although you will only get better acceleration or top speed. There are plenty of de-cat exhausts available if you're willing to spend the money but really you will need to mod your air filter & fuelling as well. Depends on how deep your pockets are & how far you're willing to go.

Trying to make R125 faster is like trying to make VW Polo 1.0 faster, but people do it so hey... lol

1) One tooth smaller front sprocket = better acceleration, a bit lower top speed

2) for the 15 bhp bike the best mod you can do is.. losing its and riders weight. I'm not joking. The first can be expensive, the second cost nothing, you actually get money from that.

3) Big bore kit + exhaust = crazy money for 2-3bhp increase. Do it, do it! Laughing

Anyway this is a direction youre heading to - Yamaha R125 with 182cc big bore kit showing its impressive acceleration...

If you can only ride a 125 for the next 18 months then sell the YZF-R125 and buy a 2 stroke 125.

How come you're stuck with a 125 for 18 months?

Rapid.

sounds exactly like the hairdryer r125 i was driving alongside a few days ago. its a horrible sound!!! worse than the CBF250 i was stuck with as a hire bike for a few days.

it looks cool, but knowing its a 125 (albeit with a big bore) just is laughable.

fair play to trying though!

Hiya buddy I got my yzf r125 about 2 months ago, Im 6ft 3" and i fit the bike perfectly the bike has been designed with the taller person in mind. I did the plymouth Mega ride on it and managed to get 77 out of it. There is restriction in the exaust (catylic converters) im thinking about getting a micron exaust on mine wich gives me an extra 2.5bhp. not sure deristricting it would do much. dunno.
Anyway its a top bike so go get it.

Perhaps you should read the thread title & question properly then? Wink

He wasn't asking if it was good idea or not he was asking how he could get more from his bike. Thinking

People are reading the question and are giving the best answer.

He could pour lots of money into making it faster, and the bike will go slightly faster. Or, he could just sell it and buy a faster bike. That will be less expensive than tuning the YZF-R125 and will go faster than a tuned YZF-R125.

There isn't a good reason for spending lots of money tuning a YZF-R125 as if you want to go faster you should get a faster bike.

What if he doesn't want to? What if the OP is very happy with what he has & wants to make the most of it? How would you feel if people ripped into your pride & joy? All the comments I've read on various bike forums with regards to the R125 saying it's a shit bike when actually it isn't. The reviews all seem to be very good in the mags it's just a bit overpriced. Maybe the people buying this bike are happy with it & want to keep it & spend their money on it, it's their money & their choice. I just think telling someone to sell their pride & joy & get a bigger bike is a bit off & not what the OP was asking so sorry your post is redundant.

Yes, it is their money and it is their choice.

I'm not saying to sell it and get a bigger bike, I'm saying to sell it and get a 2 stroke 125 as they are a lot faster than a YZF-R125. The owners might not like that fact, but it's still true.

No one has made any secret of the fact that they can pour lots of money into trying to tune their YZF-R125 if they really want to, that is completely their decision is they want to. But, it's much less expensive and much easier to just sell the slow YZF-R125 and buy a 2 stroke 125 which will be lots faster than a 'tuned' YZF-R125.

It's similar to someone spending lots of money 'tuning' a 1 litre fiesta, they could spend lots of money on it and they'll make slight improvements to the speed and acceleration of the car. But it would much easier and much cheaper for them to just sell the fiesta and buy a faster car.

The slow YZF-R125 might be their 'pride and joy' but I'm pretty sure if they sold it and then bought a faster 2 stroke 125 then that would very quickly become their 'pride and joy'. Smile

I'd certainly want someone to tell me if something I was doing was going to be a big waste of money.
I'd also prefer people to offer me good advice based on my situation, rather than purely if I ask for advice on the precise subject.
This happens most times when 'talking' to people generally, so I see no issue with it on a motorcycle forum.

What if the owner is completely happy with the situation - but other people have been happy in the same situation and only later realised that what they would have been much happier doing things differently? Should they still keep their mouths shut and not offer advice based on their experience?

Thanks to many internet threads, I'm thankful that I've made choices that I'm happy with despite the alternatives. If I'd had access to such knowledge then I'd have made different choices when 17, which while I was happy with them then, in hindsight I would have been happier in other ways and wasted less money.

It looks to be fairly tunable from the aftermarket parts that have now become available for it. You will need to spend £££'s or more to get a noticable decent gain in power from it. They make about 12.2bhp at the rear tyre, and i think at 125cc you might get it up to 15bhp r/w. For alot more cash, probabaly £1k+ you could get a bigger capacity engine conversion kit, and with alot of parts added to this and set up correctly (which would be another few £££), then i reckon a big bore tuned nasp conversion would see anything up to 22bhp r/w. This should allow a genuine 85-90mph with the right gearing.

However this is the nearly at performance level of a std but de-restricted NSR125 or TZR125R, so you will spend alot of cash for a relatively small if still noticable gain in performance. If you are keeping the bike many years and have the cash to blow on it, then fair enough! If your waiting to do your test or saving for a bigger bike in 12months then just forget touching it at all!

I doubt you will get much for such a seriously modifed bike at re-sale time, so you need to think about it carefully IMO. I'm afraid i've been there and got the T-shirt, from my speedfight tuning days. For what i spent on that bike i could have brought a brand new TDR125, and added a few nice aftermarket parts, and been much happier with the end result too!

Listen to me, leave it alone, just ride it as it is. The bike doesn't like missing its services by even a mile, you have to check the valves every periodic service and change the oil every 1800 miles, failure to do this will result in a new top end.

Anyone else think this is a troll?

...Anyway, have to agree with the "don't bother" sentiments, I think it's a perfectly reasonable answer to the question posed. You know what its like at that age, you don't know jack shit...no offence Laughing Leave it alone then pass your test or get a 2 stroke. Clearly a total waste of money to do anything else and you'll be bored of any minor increase in power just as fast as you got bored of the current power.
