Id class anyone as a fool who passes their test and gets a 1000+ cc. One flick of your un-experienced wrist and your on the floor, and the bikes in the bin.

Thats crap, there are plenty of 1000cc+ bikes that would be suitable I feel my TDM900 would be a far better first bike than my Speed Four. A Varadero would be pretty good for a big bloke too. if you like being bummed there are plenty of 1000+cc cruisers that would be ok as a first bike.

Back on topic, GSXR 1100 is probably one of the worsT first bikes in the world Laughing mental and heavy.

This is mainly what im saying, im also saying its far better to work yourself up, rather than jump straight on a 1000cc for your first ever bike. Your far more likely to have an accident.

Yeah, you might as well call the ambulance now so you can fly straight into the back when you crash.

Better to get the Bandit or similar for a while first.

A modern litre sportsbike as a first big bike is debatable, but an old 1100? Utterly insane imo.

It'll rip your arms off and chuck the rest of you in a ditch.

Before you even put it in gear.

Hi

GSXR11. The bike that was so quick with such bad handling that it killed off the unlimited class at the TT for years.

All the best

Keith (GSXR11 owner)

If you can get it cheap enough, then do it. Tell the guy that you think it's a bit expensive for your first big bike, and see if you can get it a bit cheaper. If he is being pressured hard enough to sell it, then you will be able to get it cheaper.

I'd want at least a few £££ left with any big old bike of that age, as you will find that things will need doing to it, unless it's had a full re-build with new suspension, bearings, brakes chain& sprockets, clutch etc etc.

Id then book a couple of days off and get used to it gently. Get a couple of 1/2 day sessions booked with an advanced riding school and explain that it's your first big bike, and that you want to get more comfortable with riding it.

It won't handle or stop like a modern bike, but if it's well maintained and well set up, i still think it would be a real hoot! Hell it's also a hard as nails cult bike, and that alone gives you instant street cred and makes you sound like one hard fucker down the pub too! Laughing

Insurance will be expensive, running costs reasonable depending on your annual mileage, and mpg in the 40's on average?

The big plus points are that if it's a tidy bike and stays that way then it can only go up in value over time, so you will effectively own a bike thats depreciation proof. It will also feel very characterful compared to a modern Litre bike, and if it's the oil cooled GSXR engine, it's pretty tough and easy to service too!

The biggest downsides to me are the insurance, and also the fact that big litre bikes do get through tyres, chains, brake pads, and suspension more quickly, but i suspect you will not be riding it that hard for a long while, so im sure it will be not too bad on consumables.

Hell there is no more 2 stroke oil to buy at £10 per litre, so thats saved a bit towards a big annual service etc.

Hi newbie to the forum and just picked up on the 'is a gixer K a good choice for first real bike', my kinda forum!

I've just picked up an '89 totally standard model as my return to big road bikes after 8 years - been enduros for a while. I started biking at 16 back in the days of AP50 straight to X7 on 'L's and then onto various LC's - splendid.

My gixer reminds me sooo much of that time - although totally different to the X7/LCs still that buzz of just gotta get out on it.

True the throttle works both ways but instant response and I'll do it my way handling demands respect and concentration. Not my recommendation for first big bike but definitely on the list of gotta have one someday. Mind you I did commute on a PE400 for a year so probably not a great judge of sensible bikes ; )

Certainly not one for a beginner. The handling was so wayward on them that they came with a steering damper the size of a bicycle pump. Laughing

Steady Big H, my pride an joy's an 89 Gixer11 and it feels fine to me.... mind you I've not owned a modern sportsbike to compare and my other bike had knobblies on Wink

My mate hopped straight off his 916 for a blast on the Gixer and vowed never to try it again - aha I thought, too much stomp for him but he kept muttering blasphemous phrases like 'handles like a pig on stilts, surely your not taking that to a track day?!' - don't know what he means Mr. Green

Have to agree though, not the ideal beginners bike but at least you'll gain some experience(s) real quick

I agree it is more about the bhp than the cc but even so a thou is really pushing it!

Was it this time last year that Matt looped his Gixxer at a stop line while being stupid?

Let me guess.... you are in your very early twenties and are yet to have any children?

<raised eyebrow>

I have some points for you to consider

1) Not everyone wants to ride a sports bike, shock horror some people actually prefer their bikes not to be dripping in random sheets of plastic
2) I've had 85mph out of a 25 year old 28bhp 250cc Honda and last I checked the speed limit was 70mph
3) Anything over a ton is instant ban territory
4) Big Sportsbikes (600-1000cc) have the highest rates of K/SI accidents bar possibly peds, which lets face it are ridden by chavs
5) The rider in question is already in a high risk catagory, male 30's, low experience

I could go on. Short version is that I agree biking is about managing your personal risks on a slidng scale, however live fast - die wide loses its lusture after you've buried a few friends.

Kind of proves the point on the power deliver though, and I only it up because it is such a perfect example of how easily things can go wrong with that kind of power onboard. Wink

I'll try not to mention it for a couple more months.... promise...

not at all. a SRAD 6 doesnt power wheelie. needs a bit of clutch to come up. things can go wrong trying wheelies with a pillion at 11am with a massive hangover Wink blaiming the bike is a fags way out.
