PostPosted: 13:50 - 18 Nov 2009    Post subject: Free email accounts Reply with quote

Recently I've realised I have a lot of stuff related to my work email account that could bugger me up if I every suddenly lost my job or something and could no longer access it. Things like banking/shopping etc.
I used to have a Hotmail account but found that a pain in the arse with all the stupid MSN stuff and constant adverts being thrust into my account.

Anyone have any recommendations of email accounts I could register with for free online and use whilst it also remains pretty safe?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Gmail is the best. I managed to get an account @gmail.com rather than @googlemail.com when it first started. You can still get one if you go through an american proxy website.

Banned you say. Well all the other are crap tbh. Too much faf in the way. Gmail is so simple and quick. It doesn't load each message as you click them. When you login everything gets done so once your logged in, everything is light speed pretty much.

Seems weird you can browse on here but they don't let you use Google. Can you ask them why Google is banned ?

i agreed with Joes recommendation, which you can configure for retrieval through most desktop mail clients so you can avoid having to login to their site or you could try Yahoo if its not blocked.

Well the Google search engine can be used but when trying to get into Google email it's banned under the 'email' heading. And I've just tried Yahoo email and the same happens there so I guess I'm gonna be limited to what I can use... Thumbs Up

And no, I can't ask why without raising certain unwanted questions! Wink

Have you tried using the Gmail pop3 and smtp servers to access your email at work?

If that doesn't work you should be able to use mail2web.com or one of the sites like it; they can't all be banned.

+3 for Google Mail. Try turning on HTTPS in the options which might make it work at work. Or alternatively, as others have said, set up POP or IMAP access to it in whatever email client you use there (Outlook/Thunderbird etc). Thumbs Up

Makes no difference if you put Gmail on a Googlemail account it still goes the same place. Got 2 Gmail accounts and a Googlemail account but always give Gmail on all of them.

Arrgh! It's so frustrating. I thought I'd found the trick by going through the network setup and changing a few settings. Deleted all my cookies/temp files/history etc then tried Google mail and got straight on there, set up an account moved a few emails etc, etc. Then logged off, shut the window down and tried again only to be blocked again this time! Evil or Very Mad
It's the same with some other websites - the biggest pain is my colleagues are able to log on to this stuff without problems time and time again.

I'm not sure how to setup POP or IMAP of the top of my head so I'll do a bit of research and see where that gets me. Thumbs Up

Update: I've just done the 'Deleted all my cookies/temp files/history etc again' closed the window, reopened it and can now get onto Googlemail again. So something is being stored that when the same site is visited again 2nd time around seems to flag the company web blocker... very odd.
Ah well, now I know how to access this problem is solved! Laughing Thumbs Up

Go into gmail settings and click enable pop3 and smtp or something similar to that and it will have walkthroughs and pictures to tell you what to do. You can't go wrong.
