I just went in the cupboard under the stairs to test a new torch out and saw the meters!

I was captivated by the way the leccy one spins round and round..... I then turned a load of shit on to speed it up Razz

What actually makes it spin? Its obviously some sort of electro-magnetic thingy but does anyone know what one it actually is?

The gas main was boring, but was interesting in its own way. Where is the next shut off before the one going into the house? Is there a gas main shut off on every street?

If you remove the glass and stop that wheel from spinning you won't get charged for electric. Try it and see.

Spin the wheel the opposite way and you generate your own electricity, and they pay you for it.

You go to all that trouble to test out a torch? Why dont you just turn the light off in the room you are in? Laughing

Years back when i was in a council house we used to cut a sheet of thin plastic into a strip and insert it into the side of the meter where the two halves joined till it touched the wheel stopping it and giving us free leccy.

Dunno if it still works though...

Hi

There are numerous ways to fiddle meters but they are mostly easily spotted and leave plenty of evidence (crude and dangerous way is using some pins and jump leads).

All the best

I wasn't actually thinking of ways to "play"with the meter Laughing

It just struck me as interesting.

On topic though, surely the leccy company are suspicious if the little diskey stops spinning? You need to sort of brake it somehow so you get charged a plausible yet minimal amount as opposed to "not using any leccy at all".

Hi

The ways to stop the old style meters with a spinning disk will leave evidence (common trick was to drill a small hole and the push in a match stick to stop the disk spinning). The meter readers know how to spot these and will have a camera to take a photograph of the meter, and then the electric company will take you to court and back bill you on how much electricity they estimate you have used since the time they think you fiddled the meter.

There used to be a trick with card meters that some folded up tin foil into the card slot and then a bit of power (lighter for a gas cooker normally) would trigger them to give more gas. However the meter makers caught onto that years ago and changed the meters to reset the credit down and to negative amounts when it was tried. And wouldn't do you that much good anyway as the meter is just there to collect the tokens and release a bit of gas, the billing is seperate.

There are electronic means to fiddle a meter as well, but then you probably get the obvious sudden reduction in consumption.

All the best

Keith
