I did my DAS last year. I paid £380 (£120 for the CBT a few months earlier). So all in (apart from the theory test cost) I paid £500.

That was a four day course with the test on the last day.

My brother in-law has recently bought a bike and has been quoted £725 for a 4 day course (inc CBT, mod 1 and 2 tests) by Motag in Hampshire.

I'm guessing costs have gone up a bit since the new testing was introduced, I'm just a bit surprised as that's £200 more than a year ago!

Does this seem fair to you guys? Does anyone recommend anyone else in Hampshire that he could call?

I know a guy who paid in excess of a thou to do his DAS course.

Is he doing the test on his bike or their bike?

I paid £540 for 3 days and test included on thier 125cc bike. But failed.

Thanks for the replies -

He'll be using the training centre's bikes.

When you add up the £725 plus however much it is for the theory and petrol there and back each day, it must be around the £800 mark all in.

That's insane! But there we go, he's booked it and paid a deposit...

It is ridiculously expensive, especially if the tests arent passed first time etc-- but its worth it!

Good luck to your brother-in-law Smile

What nobody ever seems to mention on DAS cost threads is that there are wages to be paid out from that cost as well. In all thats 5 days including CBT, the instructor has to be paid from that. I have no idea what they earn but even if it is £500 per week basic (which isn't a lot) that takes a big chunk out of the £750.

I appreciate that it is not one to one tuition (is it two to one?) but even so, take out wages, employer contributions, and other assorted overheads and it does not seem so bad.

That is a good point and I do appreciate that the instructors have to be paid and bikes fueled and maintained but it was a lot of money in my circumstance as my other half was doing his training and test too lol Smile

It's funny because I remember time and again when I was doing my test, people saying I was silly for doing the A2 licence and that I should just do DAS. But looking at these prices, even before the increases over the past year or so, I've saved a huge amount going down the A2 route.

-Rode a 50cc moped for about 6 months to a year on my car licence.
-CBT £90
-Rode my 125 for a year before having 2 lessons at £70 each and taking my test £80ish (for both theory and practical roughly) all on my own bike. Passed first time.
-Got my SLR650 a month later.
-In 6 months time my restriction disappears! Laughing

Admittedly it takes me longer than a DAS would but I know which route I'd rather do...

A) DAS for £800+ in a week or so.

B) My route for £240 over 2 years. The other bonus of this is I learn to ride gradually rather than jumping onto a big bike straight away and being more likely to kill myself! Laughing

Two years ago it cost me £290 for a three day course including use of an ER-5 for the training and the test. I booked/paid for the tests myself but that price also included 'guaranteed pass' whereby they'll keep giving me an extra day of tuition and hire for the test until you pass/give up. I think a 4 day course including CBT and guaranteed pass was ~£400.

£750 is outrageous, even though the test is more complex.

News just in from my brother in-law.

After spending £725 on the DAS, he failed his MOD 1 last Friday (49kph on the swerve test on second attempt) - That's another £150.

He's just told me that at the end of each day he's having to fill up the tank and pay for the fuel!

So let's say £10 per day on fuel (probably more than this) He's racked up £945 for training + at least £20 getting to and from the training centre.

So if I'd taken my test 6 months later I'd need to budget for £1000. Blimey!

Thats not on that he has to fill up the tank really- surely it should be included?

Thats very steep to retake a module that basically takes 10 mins...my retake was £70, including bike hire, instructor, test fee...and fuel. With that we got a hour or so riding around as well.

Hope he gets on alright on his second go. Smile

My thought exactly - they are charging enough! Was he aware that this would be the case beforehand, or did they just kindly inform him once the bike was almost empty?

To be honest he didn't mention beforehand that fuel wasn't included. But I feel that overall they're way too expensive!

He's currently out doing his module 1 re-take today (the extra £150 part). The thing is, due to possible bad weather this afternoon the test may be cancelled. His instructor has said if it is cancelled, another days training and test will cost him £50!!! So where'd the £100 go that he paid for today?? I'm certain the DVLA or whoever won't re-imburse the taining firm £100...

The company is called MOTAG (motag.com).

I was quoted £750 for a DAS course here in Sheffield but had my own 125 so wanted to use my own bike really. Found an excellent instructer in Chesterfield £90 for mod 1 training passed 1st time with no faults, test was £15, then 2 one to one lessons for mod 2 at £65 ea, passed with 1 fault, test was £75. My CBT was with another company £90 so all in for £400 im happy with that Very Happy
