Now where to start..

I know nothing about off road bikes.

My plan is to buy a non runner then get it going trdy it up then get it coverd in mud with the SE lot.

Thing is i know naff all about the makes of off road bikes, the good ones and the ones to steer clear of.

So i decided to put it out ot BCF to help me.

Please dont kill me! Laughing

P.S... if you know of anyone with a bike... Wink

Make sure you pay a fair bit less for your non-runner, easy to pay similar to what a bike in good nick costs.

Are you going to ride to the 'lanes?
Do you want to do anything more serious on it in the future; enduros, motocross, etc?

If you want a decent ride to the lanes, make it a 400cc+ 4stroke (250cc+ 2stroke), I reckon.
If you don't mind riding a bit more slowly, then just get what you can find for the best value.

What is your budget?
Yamaha WRs are comeptition enduro bikes and probably out of your budget.
XR400 is an ok choice, 440 means someone has used a big bore kit.
FZR250 might be a little too revvy and not quite the ideal shape, I'd stick with the SP1 instead of this for off-roading probably.

I'm presuming your budget is going to be limited, so it's going to be a case of what is out there and the best value, not looking for specific models really.
However, I'll indulge you with some letters to look out for:
DR, WR, CRM, KMX, KDX, KLX, KLR, CCM, RMX, EXC, EC, XR, FE, LC4, DT, TTR, TE, TM, XLR
Often the bigger models (650cc++) can be quite heavy, the LC4 enduro models, TE and XR650R being exceptions. You want to keep under 130-140kg claimed weight if you can.
Some of the older (kickstart) 600cc models aren't nearly as bad weight wise as their later electric start 650cc brothers.

Edit: I have actually got a CCM I'd consider selling, but frankly I'm not sure it's worth your time as it needs a fair bit of work and I want a reasonable chunk of money for it (as the parts along are worth a fair bit).
